Job Summary
The Engineer in Training is an entry-level professional position designed to provide practical engineering experience under the supervision and mentorship of the Director of Engineering and licensed professional engineer. The Engineer in Training assists with design reviews, construction inspections, development review, traffic analysis, and capital improvement projects while developing the technical knowledge and professional skills necessary for advancement within the Engineering Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists with engineering projects involving transportation, drainage, roadway, traffic, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Supports the review of engineering plans, construction documents, and technical reports for compliance with County standards and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Performs field inspections of construction projects to observe progress and document compliance with approved plans, specifications, and safety standards.
  • Assists in collecting field data for engineering studies, including roadway inventories, drainage evaluations, traffic counts, and site assessments.
  • Prepares calculations, exhibits, maps, spreadsheets, and reports under the direction of senior engineering staff.
  • Assists with Capital Improvement Program projects from planning through construction and project closeout.
  • Participates in technical reviews of development plans, utility permits, and zoning applications.
  • Assists with engineering analyses related to traffic operations, safety, roadway capacity, drainage, and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Learns County engineering policies, procedures, ordinances, and applicable Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) standards.
  • Coordinates with contractors, consultants, developers, utility companies, and other County departments as assigned.
  • Responds to routine public inquiries regarding engineering projects under the guidance of supervisory staff.
  • Maintains project files, engineering records, inspection reports, and documentation.
  • Attends project meetings, training sessions, and public meetings as assigned.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous professional development, including progress toward Engineer-in-Training(EIT) certification and eventual Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university, or graduation within six months of hire.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Valid Florida driver's license with clean driving record
  • Strong interest in public sector engineering and transportation infrastructure.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
  • Must demonstrate the ability and commitment to obtain licensure as a Florida Professional Engineer (P.E.) within four (4) years from the date of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous internship, cooperative education, or engineering work experience.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, or related engineering software.
  • Coursework or experience in transportation, drainage, roadway design, or construction inspection.
  • Knowledge of FDOT standards and specifications.

Working Environment and Physical Demands
Must be able to move about regularly in indoor and outdoor environments to ensure timely and safe completion of Engineering projects throughout the County. Ascends and descends natural inclines to facilitate inspection of projects.
This position frequently communicates with managers and contractors to plan and coordinate all aspects of Engineering functions and the County's Transportation Plan. Also presents to and answers questions from the general public. Must be able to accurately convey and perceive information in these situations.
Must be able to perceive, inspect and assess reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics and other topographical and geologic data to plan, design and safely execute and complete projects.
Must regularly move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally move objects up to 25 pounds. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination and stamina.
The position operates in an indoor environment, which may risk exposure to dust and in an outdoor environment around moving parts, near moving traffic or over roadways with moving traffic which may expose the worker to inclement weather, excessive heat and humidity. Employee may be exposed to pollution, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level is usually moderate.
