What is a Software Engineer Fullstack?

A Software Engineer Fullstack is a professional who develops and maintains both the front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) components of web applications. They are proficient in a range of technologies, including user interface design, server programming, databases, and APIs. This role requires a broad understanding of how web applications work from end to end, enabling them to build complete, functional products. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer Fullstack, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Fullstack, you need strong proficiency in both front-end (e.g., JavaScript, HTML/CSS, frameworks like React or Angular) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java, databases) development, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, CI/CD pipelines, cloud services, and relevant certifications (such as AWS Certified Developer or similar) is highly beneficial. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and adapt to evolving project requirements. Job description

About Counsel
Counsel's mission is to multiply the world's healthcare capacity. We believe in a future in which every person has a personalized, AI-enabled doctor always in their pocket. To accomplish this, we're building the first fully-vertical, AI-native medical group from the ground up. We've redesigned the entire clinical stack with custom AI tools that make our in-house physicians 10x faster and smarter. [learn more on our blog]
Since our founding in 2023, we have formed partnerships with leading healthcare organizations and are on track to serve hundreds of thousands of patients on our platform within the next year. We have raised over $35M from a16z, Google Ventures, Pear VC and other top-tier VC firms.
Our team combines deep expertise in medicine (Harvard, Mt. Sinai, Mass General, UCSF) and technology (MIT, Google, DeepMind, NVIDIA, Stripe, Meta) - and we're looking for exceptional people to join us as we scale.
Join us as we build the future of AI in healthcare!
About the role
We are seeking a talented, driven, and fast-moving Fullstack Software Engineer to join us in defining the future of AI + human healthcare. This is a hybrid role located in either our New York City, Flatiron office or Boston (office soon to come).
You will have significant responsibility and ownership over our product, along with the opportunity to shape the future of our engineering organization. You will work cross-functionally with product, clinical, and commercial teams while interfacing with prominent healthcare organizations nationwide as we lead the future of AI in clinical care.
Our engineering work spans a range of disciplines, including full-stack web development, data infrastructure, mobile development, and AI/MLOps. Our culture is fast-paced and ambitious, and we aim for every team member to be exceptional.
What You'll Do
  • Working closely with our Product and Design teams to ship and iterate on unique product experiences in AI-enabled care that improve patient engagement and outcomes
  • Working closely with our ML research team to bring cutting-edge AI/LLM techniques into clinical care and implement these features in production
  • Improving our physician-facing care platform and integrating AI tooling to increase physician efficiency and clinical capabilities
  • Building robust integrations with large enterprise clients, including EMR integrations with healthcare providers, claims data structuring with health plans, and HIE records parsing
What You Bring
  • 2+ years of professional experience, ideally with experience working at startups or fast-moving companies
  • Proficiency in our tech stack: React (Typescript), NextJs, React Native, Postgres (Supabase), HTML/CSS (Tailwind), AWS Infrastructure
  • Experience building at scale, serving hundreds of thousands of end-users and large enterprise clients
  • Opinionated about up-leveling your own engineering skills and the team around you
Who You Are
  • You are a self-motivated, creative doer who takes ownership of broad initiatives and drives them to completion, navigating ambiguity with ease
  • You have hands-on experience building consumer-facing products from the ground up in a high-growth, startup environment
  • You thrive on working alongside exceptional teammates and derive energy from fast-moving collaborative environments
  • You are excited about working on the frontier of medical AI
Location for this role:
NYC - hybrid, Boston - hybrid, East Coast - remote
What we offer
  • Impact: Be at the forefront of AI-augmented care delivery, tackling some of the most ambitious challenges in healthcare.
  • Growth: Professional development and leadership opportunities within a rapidly expanding tech-enabled care delivery organization.
  • Exposure: Gain hands-on experience in scaling a fast-growing healthcare technology company and directly interface with executives at the world's leading healthcare organizations.
  • Compensation: Competitive salary and equity options.
  • Benefits: Competitive healthcare, vision, and dental, 401K, Unlimited PTO, snacks and free lunch at the office.
Our Values
  • Patients come first.
We are clinicians 1st, technologists 2nd. We act with patient trust/safety at the center of every decision.
  • Innovate with optimism.
We are optimistic as we build the future of care delivery from first principles. Challenge the status quo when needed, no sacred cows.
  • Right answer wins.
Debate openly and pick the strongest path. We optimize for the company, not functions. We win and lose as a team.
  • Simplicity over complexity.
We choose clear, elegant solutions and avoid adding complexity that does not serve patients or the team.
  • Do fewer things, well.
We focus, and hold ourselves to the highest bar and pursue excellence in those areas.
