What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contractor, you need advanced programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of software development lifecycles, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with source control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and project management tools, as well as proficiency in key programming languages, is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and managing project-based workloads. These skills ensure high-quality deliverables, effective client communication, and successful navigation of varied contract environments.

How does the work structure and team integration typically differ for Software Engineer Contractors compared to full-time employees?

As a Software Engineer Contractor, you will often work on specific projects or deliverables within a defined contract period, which may mean less involvement in long-term planning or company-wide initiatives. Contractors are usually integrated into existing development teams, collaborating closely with full-time engineers, project managers, and QA staff, but may have less access to certain internal resources or benefits. While you can expect to contribute to daily stand-ups, code reviews, and agile sprints, the onboarding process and access to proprietary tools or systems may be streamlined for contractors. This role offers valuable exposure to diverse tech stacks and industries, and successful contracts can lead to extended engagements or full-time offers.

Job Summary:

Certerra is a nationally recognized provider of engineering, testing, inspection, and certification services supporting innovation, quality assurance, and resilient infrastructure. With over 1,800 professionals nationwide, we combine technical expertise with practical field knowledge to ensure the communities we serve are built to last.

We are expanding in the Hawaii market and are seeking a geotechnical engineer across experience levels - from motivated entry-level candidates to seasoned professionals. Our current backlog includes several large, landmark multi-year projects, providing long-term stability and meaningful project involvement for our Hawaii team.

If youโ€™re looking for a company that invests in your growth and gives you exposure to meaningful, high-impact projects, we want to talk to you.

Duties:

This position is responsible for evaluating subsurface conditions and providing geotechnical engineering support for a variety of construction and infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will analyze soil, rock, and groundwater conditions to support the design of foundations, earthworks, and other geotechnical systems that ensure the stability and safety of structures.

  • Geotechnical Investigations

Conduct field explorations, review subsurface conditions, and analyze laboratory testing results to characterize soil and rock properties.

Develop geotechnical recommendations and design solutions for foundations, retaining structures, slope stability, and earthwork construction.

  • Technical Reporting

Prepare clear and comprehensive geotechnical reports documenting site conditions, engineering analyses, and design recommendations.

  • Construction Support

Provide technical guidance during construction, including observation of foundation systems, earthwork, and site preparation activities.

  • Project Coordination

Assist with project planning and coordination to ensure geotechnical work is completed on schedule and within project budgets.

  • Collaboration

Work closely with civil, structural, and environmental engineers, contractors, and project teams to support successful project delivery.

We are hiring at multiple levels - responsibilities and compensation will align with education and qualifications.

Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical emphasis, Geology, or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 0โ€“10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience preferred, including subsurface investigations, geotechnical analysis, and report preparation. Candidates with varying levels of experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proficiency in geotechnical analysis software and standard engineering tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and interact with clients and contractors.
