Job description

The Position
Genentech, Inc. seeks a Principal Scientific Software Engineer at its South San Francisco, CA location.
Duties: Design and develop computation solutions from scientists in research projects. Develop and optimize genomics workflows for variant calling, alignment and transcriptomic analysis. Work in a multi-disciplinary environment with diverse teams to design, develop, and maintain a cloud-based genomic analysis system for the organization. Implement and debug genomics workflows implemented in bioinformatics software languages such as Nextflow and Workflow Definition Language. Design and develop highly scalable distributed computer infrastructure optimized for bioinformatics workflows and analysis on the cloud. Collaborate with other engineering team to provide integrated genomics research solution for the company. Apply a deep understanding of genomics data to manage data according to FAIR (Findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability) principles to ensure data quality and discovery. Implement best practices to ensure high code quality in the systems designed and developed in the organization. May telecommute up to 2 days per week.
Education and experience required: PhD, or foreign equivalent, in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related field and 2 years of experience as bioinformatics software engineer or related position in bioinformatics
Alternative education and experience required: Master's degree or foreign equivalent, in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related field and 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience as bioinformatics software engineer or related position in bioinformatics
Special Requirements: 1 year of experience must include:
  • Bioinformatics Analysis
  • Design and development of distributed genomics analysis systems
  • Genomics data engineering
  • Bioinformatics software cloud engineering
  • Experience working in a drug or clinical research development environment
  • Experience working in a scientific research multi-disciplinary environment

The expected annual salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $220,680 to $302,000 per year. Actual pay within the range will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
