As a Software Engineer Apprentice, you can expect to work on a mix of real-world projects and smaller, skill-building tasks under the guidance of experienced engineers. You may be involved in writing and testing code, debugging existing software, participating in code reviews, and assisting with documentation. Apprentices frequently collaborate with other team members through agile workflows and regular meetings, which helps build both technical and communication skills. These experiences are designed to give you practical exposure to industry-standard tools and development cycles, while supporting your growth into a full-fledged software engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a software engineer apprenticeship?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Apprentice, you need a foundational understanding of programming concepts, problem-solving skills, and often a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Job description

we are seeking an Applications Engineer to develop concepts, pricing, and proposals for automated equipment, tooling, fixtures, and inspection systems.

This position is ideal for an experienced Toolmaker, Machine Builder, CNC Programmer, Manufacturing Technician, Mechanical Designer, or Automation Professional looking to leverage their hands-on manufacturing knowledge in a more technical, customer-focused role. You'll work closely with engineering, sales, and project teams to develop practical solutions, estimate project costs, and support customer proposals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review customer specifications, statements of work, drawings, and other technical documentation to develop project concepts and quotations.
  • Prepare proposals, estimates, bills of materials (BOMs), and pricing packages for custom automation equipment, tooling, fixtures, and gauges.
  • Work closely with mechanical and controls engineering teams to develop accurate concepts and project scopes.
  • Support sales and business development efforts by providing technical input during the quotation process.
  • Participate in quote review meetings and customer discussions as needed.
  • Assist with equipment and tooling concepts, layouts, and design recommendations.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, engineering, and external suppliers to gather technical and cost information.
  • Assemble complete project handoff packages for engineering and production teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve estimating processes, project costing, and proposal development procedures.
  • Support project schedules and customer deadlines as required.

Qualifications

  • Technical degree, apprenticeship, military technical training, or equivalent hands-on manufacturing experience.
  • Experience in tooling, machining, machine building, automation, manufacturing engineering, estimating, or custom equipment design.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, customer specifications, and statements of work.
  • Experience creating or working with bills of materials (BOMs), material costing, and project estimates.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, tooling, fixtures, automation systems, or custom machinery.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with CAD software is beneficial.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Preferred Backgrounds

We encourage applications from candidates with experience as:

  • Toolmaker
  • Senior Machinist
  • CNC Programmer
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Machine Builder
  • Mechanical Designer
  • Tooling Engineer
  • Industrial Maintenance Technician
  • Automation Technician
  • Process Engineer

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate understands how things are built and manufactured and can translate customer requirements into practical solutions and realistic project costs. We value hands-on experience just as much as formal education and are looking for someone who can bring real-world manufacturing knowledge to the quoting and applications process.
