Job description

Do you have a passion for space? While others may be putting people in space, we are putting people on the Moon and Mars and beyond.

Job Description

The Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks to design and integrate GN&C systems for projects ranging from CubeSats to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). We are looking at the last minute for an undergraduate or a graduate student fall intern with academic or work experience in controls, 6 DOF modeling, simulation, and tool development! This position will support the Human Lander System Program (HLSP) to ensure safety and mission success in sending humans back to the Moon!

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop, modify, and maintain software simulations, tools, and scripts
  • Create, edit, and debug software written in MATLAB, Simulink, and/or Simscape Multibody
  • Model, simulate, and analyze launch vehicle and/or spacecraft dynamics and performance
  • Analyze systems in the time and frequency domain
  • Work with GN&C leads and other engineering disciplines
  • Support verification and validation of technical products
  • Prepare and present technical reports and/or briefings
  • Create and review engineering and software documentation

Qualifications:

Current enrollment in an engineering, science, technical, engineering, math, computer science, or related BS or MS degree program. A degree program at an ABET accredited institution is preferred.

You are expected to have a valid Star ID/ Real ID driver's license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations.

Required skills/experience:

  • Programming in MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape Multibody, and/or C/C++
  • Experience preparing, presenting, and reviewing technical reports and briefings including analysis and software documentation
  • Must be detail oriented and self-motivated that can work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Have completed sophomore year of university studies and be in good academic standing
  • Maintain an overall average of 3.0

Desired skills/experience:

  • Academic or work experience modeling, simulating, and analyzing the performance of aerospace vehicles in the time domain
  • Experience improving analysis tools and/or controls models.
  • Academic work, experience, or demonstrated interest in control systems design/analysis
  • Analyzing systems for stability margin in the frequency domain (Nichols, Bode, Nyquist, Root Locus).
  • Deriving state equations related to space craft and launch vehicle systems.
  • Conducting design and development of flight control systems including PID control gain design, state estimation, adaptive control, neural networks, or other advanced control methods.
  • Conducting controls related trade, parametric, and failure analysis studies.
  • Implementing machine learning algorithms for controls, modeling, system identification, or other aerospace applications.
  • Developing GUIs in Matlab
  • Programming in Python
  • Familiar with conducting unit tests and analyses for simulation/software development, verification, and validation.
  • Creating visualizations in 3D tools such as Terragen, STK, or Unreal Engine.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<5%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings and test stands at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
