Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY: 

The Nursing Director is accountable for the comprehensive administration of key functions, roles, systems and processes in assigned areas of responsibility - for this role it will be Medical/Surgical Administration. The Nursing Director acts as a department head for the assigned area and provides key leadership for patient-centered care delivery and the Medical Center’s mission, vision and beliefs. 

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 

  1. Keeps abreast of current clinical trends and technology for areas of responsibility and provides a system perspective for managers and staff.  

  1. *Functions as Director for areas of responsibility ensuring alignment with the provision of patient care. 

  1. *Assures that clinical staff resources and assignments are consistent with meeting patient care needs. 

  1. Manages clinical emergencies and operates internal and external disaster plan. 

  1. *Activates resources and integrates nursing services with other departments to foster patient-centered care. 

  1. *Assures consistency in interpretation and application of the care delivery model, mission, vision and beliefs of the organization. 

  1. *Develops capital and operating budgets with input from mangers for areas of responsibility in accordance with budget timetables. 

  1. *Works with managers and staff to assure expenses are within budget parameters for areas of responsibility; reviews and analyzes budget and other management reports and takes action as needed to assure effective and efficient operations.

  1. *Develops and sustains standards of care and practices which are consistent with current trends for existing programs/services.  

  1. Develops programs and services based on needs analysis and facilitates their implementation and evaluation. 

  1. Implements the Medical Center Corporate Compliance Plan; assists with review of the Bryan Medical Center’s plan for Patient Care Services and recommends adjustments. 

  1. Establishes and maintains job descriptions for areas of responsibility. 

  1. Meets or exceeds Joint Commission and other regulatory and accreditation standards. 

  1. Participates in risk management activities. 

  1. *Resolves clinical concerns by patients, families, and physicians; promotes medical staff relationships. 

  1. Provides leadership and participates in Medical Center improvement initiatives and teams as assigned. 

  1. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  1. Knowledge of nursing and hospital systems, nursing trends, and applied nursing processes. 

  1. Knowledge of quality improvement and budgetary and financial methods and practices. 

  1. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 

  1. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.   

  1. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, memoranda, performance evaluations with measurable behaviors. 

  1. Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance. 

  1. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations. 

  1. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment related to changing patient needs including working with patients with acute, chronic and complex disease processes and those who are dying. 

  1. Ability to balance and prioritize diverse management and clinical responsibilities. 

  1. Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and work as a team member. 

  1. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act required.  Masters degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration or related field required.  Minimum of three (3) years progressive experience in a clinical position related to the area of assignment required. Minimum of three (3) years experience in management or supervisory role required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.) 

(DOT) – Characterized as sedentary work requiring exertion up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.   

Requires ability to move between facilities, patient rooms and medical center departments in order to meet patient and family contact needs.
