Software Development Software Engineer information

What does a Software Development Software Engineer do?

A Software Development Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications or systems. They work with various programming languages and technologies to create software solutions that meet user or business needs. Their responsibilities often include writing code, debugging issues, collaborating with other team members, and ensuring software quality and performance. Software Engineers may also participate in planning, code reviews, and updating documentation to support ongoing software projects.

What is the difference between Software Development Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware Development Software EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field, certifications optionalBachelor's in CS or related field, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentCollaborative teams, Agile/Scrum settings, cross-functional projectsIndividual or team projects, coding-focused tasks
Industry UsageUsed across tech companies, startups, and large enterprisesCommon in software firms, tech startups, and freelance work
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for roles involving system design and architectureTypically searched for coding and application development roles

While both roles involve software creation, a Software Development Software Engineer often focuses on system design, architecture, and collaborative project management, whereas a Software Developer primarily concentrates on coding and implementing software solutions. The engineer role may require broader technical knowledge and involvement in the development lifecycle, making it suitable for those interested in both design and coding aspects of software projects.

How do Software Development Software Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Software Development Software Engineers often work closely with product managers, designers, and quality assurance teams to deliver well-rounded solutions. Collaboration usually involves attending regular stand-up meetings, participating in sprint planning, and conducting code reviews. Effective communication and a willingness to incorporate feedback from various stakeholders are key to ensuring project goals are met and potential issues are identified early. Building strong relationships with colleagues in different roles can also streamline the development process and foster a positive team environment.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior software engineers, especially those with extensive experience, expertise in high-demand skills like machine learning or cloud computing, and working at large tech companies or startups, can earn $300,000 or more annually. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, particularly in competitive markets or leadership roles.

Can a software engineer be a software developer?

A software engineer and a software developer often have overlapping roles, and many professionals perform both functions. Typically, a software engineer applies engineering principles to design and build software systems, while a software developer focuses on writing and implementing code. The terms are sometimes used interchangeably depending on the company or project, but both roles require programming skills and knowledge of development tools.

Will AI replace developers in 2026?

As a software development engineer, AI is expected to augment coding and automate repetitive tasks, but it is unlikely to fully replace developers by 2026. Human skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and understanding user needs remain essential in software creation and maintenance. Developers will need to adapt by learning AI tools and focusing on complex, high-level tasks.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Software engineers in senior or specialized roles at large technology companies or in high-demand sectors can earn $500,000 or more annually, often including base salary, bonuses, and stock options. Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills in areas like machine learning or cloud computing, and often involves working in competitive, high-paying environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Software Engineer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and typically a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and knowledge of software development methodologies (such as Agile or Scrum) are commonly required. Strong collaboration, communication, and adaptability are essential soft skills for working effectively in team environments and responding to project changes. These skills and qualities are crucial for building reliable, maintainable software and contributing to successful, dynamic development projects.

Job description

Join the Exploration, Environment and Earth Intelligence Division at Leidos, where you'll play a pivotal role supporting the U.S. Naval Oceanography Program at the John C. Stennis Space Center. This unique opportunity blends software engineering and data science, allowing you to develop and sustain mission-critical systems and extract actionable insights from complex scientific and geospatial data-directly impacting Navy and allied operations.

As a member of our embedded team at the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO), you'll collaborate with technical experts, work with high-resolution databases, and help solve real-world challenges in undersea warfare, oceanography, and meteorology. You'll have the chance to design, build, and analyze advanced software and data solutions in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance operational software systems, from requirements gathering through deployment, using best practices in a hybrid agile environment.
  • Design and implement methods to consolidate, analyze, and visualize large, complex, and diverse datasets from multiple sources.
  • Apply advanced statistical concepts, algorithms, and automated processes to solve practical Naval Oceanography challenges.
  • Collaborate with physical scientists, software engineers and data scientists on configuration management, data analysis, cyber reviews, and operational testing.
  • Contribute to scientific data processing, geospatial mapping, and the development of tools, dashboards, and queries to monitor and improve operational performance.
  • Communicate progress, insights, and potential risks effectively within the team.
  • Ensure all activities meet technical, schedule, and cost goals, and comply with Navy security and information assurance requirements.

What You Bring:

  • U.S. citizenship and an active Secret (or above) security clearance (or ability to obtain one quickly).
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; relevant experience or certifications may substitute for degree.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, and Python (including libraries like Pandas, NumPy, SciPy).
  • Experience with database technologies (e.g. SQL, NoSQL) and data manipulation in Windows and Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS products and geospatial workflows.
  • Ability to execute, troubleshoot, and modify scripts (Python, shell).
  • Strong foundation in statistics, data analysis, and scientific data processing.
  • Understanding of AI/ML techniques, cloud-based methods, and modern software development frameworks (e.g., MVVM, WPF, .NET MAUI).
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with NAVOCEANO production data, processes, and products (e.g., Oceanographic and Atmospheric Model Library, Navy Digital Bathymetric Database).
  • Knowledge of classified and unclassified Navy computing environments.

If you're passionate about building innovative software and uncovering insights from complex data-and want to make a real impact on national security and scientific discovery-we encourage you to apply!
