What is a software development engineer in testing?

Software Development Engineers in Testing (SDETs) are professionals who specialize in both software development and testing. They design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks and tools to ensure the quality and functionality of software applications. SDETs work closely with developers to create robust test cases, identify bugs, and improve product reliability. Their role bridges the gap between traditional software testers and developers, requiring strong programming skills as well as a deep understanding of testing methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer in testing?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer In Testing, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software testing principles, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automation tools such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, as well as version control systems like Git, is essential, and certifications in test automation can be advantageous. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with development teams. These skills ensure high-quality, reliable software products through efficient test automation and seamless integration within development workflows.

How does a software development engineer in testing typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during a product release cycle?

SDETs play a key role in bridging the gap between development and quality assurance by working closely with both teams throughout the product release cycle. They participate in code reviews, contribute to designing robust test automation frameworks, and often pair with developers to ensure testability of new features. As a software developer and systems administrator supporting defense missions, you understand that high-quality systems require secure engineering practices, disciplined development workflows, and an appreciation for how technology enables complex operational environments. You think beyond individual tasks, anticipating how your work strengthens enterprise applications that support critical DoD mission functions. We're looking for a developer like you to help build, enhance, and modernize software tools that support Joint Education and Doctrine, including the Joint Electronic Library and associated content development tools. These in turn support education, training, readiness, and other mission activities.
You will help the Joint Staff by modernizing and improving large-scale DoD-focused software ecosystems by supporting application sustainment, performing secure coding and remediation tasks, conducting validation testing, refining codebases, and ensuring solutions operate reliably across approved DoD environments. You will help ensure applications meet cybersecurity, interoperability, and performance requirements while aligning development practices with Zero Trust principles, RMF guidelines, and modern DoD software engineering standards.
In this role, you will translate requirements into functional software, develop and refine application features, support secure software changes, perform testing, and assist with updates that ensure mission tools remain secure, responsive, and aligned with evolving DoD needs. Your work will help advance enterprise applications that enable training, planning, education, and readiness support activities across DoD organizations.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • Experience executing or supporting RMF activities and the ATO lifecycle for DoD information systems
  • Experience translating mission requirements into application features, specifications, or technical designs
  • Experience writing, modifying, and maintaining source code, and developing software design plans, technical analyses, unit tests, test scripts, and supporting documentation
  • Experience evaluating existing systems or components to identify modernization, reuse, integration, or redesign opportunities
  • Experience supporting STIG or RMF-aligned patching, remediation, and compliance workflows
  • Knowledge of secure coding practices
  • Ability to produce and maintain complete software and database documentation, including source code artifacts, deployment instructions, and technical documentation
  • Secret clearance
  • Associate's degree and 10+ years of experience in software development and cybersecurity, or Bachelor's degree in CS, Software Engineering, Information Systems Management, or IT and 6+ years of experience in software development and cybersecurity
  • Defense Cyber Work Force Role 451 System Administrator Certification

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience in systems administration, administering servers, privileged accounts, system configurations, or enterprise applications
  • Experience performing database maintenance, backups, updates, or troubleshooting
  • Experience deploying patches, new software, or system updates with validation testing
  • Experience producing deployment instructions, configuration baselines, system diagrams, or required technical documentation
  • Experience supporting RMF workflows, ATO packages, cybersecurity remediation, or scan response coordination
  • Experience supporting Zero Trust Architecture elements
  • Experience supporting DoD enterprise system integration, access control models, or data management processes
  • Systems Administration DoD 8140 or DoDM 8140.03 Certifications such as GSEC, Security+ CE, SSCP, CCNA Security, CAP, GSLC, CISM, CASP CE, CISSP, or OS/CE Certifications
