Is SDET in high demand?

Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) are in high demand due to the increasing emphasis on quality assurance and automation in software development. Companies seek SDETs skilled in programming, testing frameworks, and tools like Selenium and Jenkins to improve product reliability and speed up release cycles.

What is the role of a software development engineer in testing?

A Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) designs, develops, and maintains automated test frameworks and scripts to ensure software quality. They collaborate with developers to identify testing requirements, write test cases, and use tools like Selenium or JUnit to execute tests, often integrating testing into continuous integration pipelines.

What engineers make $500,000?

Software Development Engineers In Test (SDETs) in senior or specialized roles at large tech companies can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with bonuses, stock options, and other compensation. High earnings typically require extensive experience, advanced skills in automation and testing tools, and often involve working in competitive tech environments or leadership positions.

What is the difference between Software Development Engineer In Test vs Software Engineer?

AspectSoftware Development Engineer In TestSoftware Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing automated tests, ensuring software qualityDeveloping software applications and features
Skills & CertificationsProgramming, testing frameworks, automation toolsProgramming, software design, system architecture
Work EnvironmentQuality assurance teams, development teams, testing labsDevelopment teams, product teams, engineering environments
Industry UsageTech companies, software firms, QA departmentsTech companies, startups, software product companies

While both roles require strong programming skills, Software Development Engineer In Test focuses on automation and testing to ensure software quality, whereas Software Engineers primarily develop new features and applications. Both roles are integral to software development but serve different aspects of the product lifecycle.

How does a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during the software development lifecycle?

As an SDET, you'll work closely with both software developers and quality assurance teams throughout the development process. Your role involves participating in design and code reviews to ensure testability, creating automated test frameworks, and writing test cases alongside developers. You'll also help identify bugs early, contribute to continuous integration pipelines, and facilitate communication between development and QA to ensure high-quality releases. This collaborative environment allows you to bridge the gap between coding and testing, making you a key player in delivering reliable software.

What is a Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET)?

A Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is a professional who combines software development skills with expertise in testing to ensure the quality of software products. SDETs design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks, write test scripts, and work closely with developers to identify and resolve defects early in the software development lifecycle. They play a critical role in integrating testing into the development process, improving test coverage, and enabling continuous integration and delivery. SDETs often have strong programming abilities and a deep understanding of both software engineering and quality assurance best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Engineer in Test, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you need a solid background in software engineering principles, programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or C#), and a strong understanding of testing methodologies. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), CI/CD tools, and sometimes certifications like ISTQB are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help SDETs collaborate with developers and identify issues efficiently. These skills are crucial to ensure robust, scalable, and high-quality software products through efficient test design and automation.

Will QA or SDET get replaced by AI?

Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) and QA professionals perform complex testing tasks that require critical thinking, creativity, and understanding of system design, which AI currently cannot fully replicate. While AI tools can automate repetitive testing and assist in identifying issues, human oversight remains essential for designing test strategies, interpreting results, and ensuring software quality. Therefore, AI is more likely to augment rather than replace SDET roles in the foreseeable future.

Job description

Your work days are brighter here.
We're obsessed with making hard work pay off, for our people, our customers, and the world around us. As a Fortune 500 company and a leading AI platform for managing people, money, and agents, we're shaping the future of work so teams can reach their potential and focus on what matters most. The minute you join, you'll feel it. Not just in the products we build, but in how we show up for each other. Our culture is rooted in integrity, empathy, and shared enthusiasm. We're in this together, tackling big challenges with bold ideas and genuine care. We look for curious minds and courageous collaborators who bring sun-drenched optimism and drive. Whether you're building smarter solutions, supporting customers, or creating a space where everyone belongs, you'll do meaningful work with Workmates who've got your back. In return, we'll give you the trust to take risks, the tools to grow, the skills to develop and the support of a company invested in you for the long haul. So, if you want to inspire a brighter work day for everyone, including yourself, you've found a match in Workday, and we hope to be a match for you too.
About the Team
The Agent Runtime team builds Workday's secure execution platform for enterprise AI agents. We are creating the runtime substrate that enforces policy by architecture, not by prompt, with deterministic controls for data access, tool use, model routing, and auditability.
Our charter spans runtime isolation, policy enforcement boundaries, model mediation, and observability at scale. We partner closely with other engineering and platform teams at Workday to deliver a multi-language, enterprise-grade agent runtime.
About the Role
As a Senior Software Development Engineer, you will design and build core runtime capabilities for policy-governed agent execution. You will own high-impact technical areas across sandbox execution, sidecar interfaces, enforcement flows, and production reliability.
In this role, you will:
  • Design and implement core runtime services for secure, isolated agent execution.
  • Build deterministic enforcement pathways for data, context, tool, and model boundaries.
  • Define and evolve service interfaces and contracts across maincar and sidecar components.
  • Improve performance, scalability, and resilience for high-concurrency workloads.
  • Build deep observability into runtime behavior, policy decisions, and audit traces.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to integrate data prep, context assembly, tool gating, and model mediation.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, incident response, and operational hardening.
  • Mentor engineers and help raise engineering quality across the team.

As a Software Development Engineer III on the Agent Runtime team, you will implement key runtime components and services that power secure agent execution. You will contribute to design, coding, testing, and operations for systems that enforce policy and reliability guarantees in production.
In this role, you will:
  • Build backend services and runtime components for cell lifecycle and execution control.
  • Implement policy-aware data, context, tool, and model access pathways.
  • Contribute to interface development between runtime components and partner systems.
  • Write high-quality, testable code and participate in code and design reviews.
  • Develop telemetry and logging capabilities for traceability and operational insight.
  • Support production operations, performance tuning, and incident follow-through.
  • Collaborate closely with senior engineers and partner teams on roadmap delivery.

About You
Sr. Software Development Engineer

  • Experience operating production services with strong reliability and observability practices.
  • Demonstrated ownership of complex technical projects from design through production.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in cross-functional environments.

Software Development Engineer III
Basic Qualification
  • 5+ years experience in software development engineering including designing, developing, and deploying software solutions.
  • 3+ years of software engineering experience in backend or platform development.

Other Qualification
  • Solid foundation in distributed systems fundamentals, APIs, and data modeling.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages used for backend systems.
  • Experience building and shipping production services with testing and monitoring.
  • Working knowledge of security fundamentals, including authentication, authorization, and least-privilege concepts.
  • Ability to debug complex issues and deliver reliable fixes in production environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and effective team collaboration.
