Software Development Business Analyst information

What does a software development business analyst do?

A Software Development Business Analyst acts as a bridge between business stakeholders and software development teams. They gather and analyze requirements, document business processes, and translate business needs into technical specifications. Their main goal is to ensure the final software product aligns with the organization's objectives and user needs. This involves facilitating communication, prioritizing requirements, and often assisting in testing and implementation phases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development business analyst?

To thrive as a Software Development Business Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of software development lifecycles, and typically a degree in computer science, information systems, or business. Familiarity with requirements management tools (like Jira or Confluence), modeling languages (such as UML), and Agile or Scrum certifications are commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set top performers apart in this role. These capabilities ensure that business needs are clearly translated into actionable technical requirements, leading to successful project outcomes.

How does a software development business analyst typically collaborate with developers and stakeholders during a project lifecycle?

A Software Development Business Analyst acts as a crucial bridge between stakeholders, such as product owners or clients, and the development team. Throughout the project lifecycle, they gather and clarify requirements, translate business needs into technical documentation, and facilitate communication to ensure everyone is aligned. They often participate in agile ceremonies like sprint planning and stand-ups, help resolve ambiguities, and validate that the delivered software meets the intended business goals. This collaborative approach helps reduce misunderstandings and ensures smoother project execution.

Job description

Job Overview
Forta Solutions is seeking an experienced Business Systems Analyst to join our Product Team. The ideal candidate has strong analytical, communication, and system-design skills, with the ability to understand complex business workflows and translate them into clear, actionable requirements for custom-developed software applications.
This role requires more than experience configuring or administering off-the-shelf financial systems. We are looking for someone who has worked directly with product and engineering teams to analyze, define, validate, and deliver custom application functionality.
The ideal candidate should also have strong knowledge of mortgage technology, with preferred experience in Mortgage Warehouse Lending.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for a strong collaborator who can help deliver a world-class client experience. The right candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced product environment, balancing client needs with scalable product design, and partnering closely with technical teams to deliver high-quality custom software.
This person should be able to go beyond documenting requests. They should be able to analyze the business problem, understand the system impact, ask the right questions, identify gaps, and help define a solution that works for users, clients, and the product.
Responsibilities
The Business Systems Analyst will support product delivery by analyzing business needs, documenting requirements, and partnering with technology teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
Responsibilities include:
  • Facilitate discussions with users, clients, internal stakeholders, product owners, and technical teams to understand business needs and system requirements.
  • Translate business needs into clear user stories, acceptance criteria, workflows, data rules, functional specifications, and system behavior documentation.
  • Analyze custom-developed application functionality, including business rules, data flows, integrations, user workflows, edge cases, permissions, reporting needs, and downstream impacts.
  • Collaborate with architects, developers, QA, DevOps, and product leadership to define solutions that meet business needs and align with the product roadmap.
  • Draft system specifications, process flows, screen behavior, field-level rules, validation logic, and integration requirements as needed.
  • Support Agile delivery by participating in backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, retrospectives, and release planning.
  • Work closely with QA to review test scenarios, clarify expected behavior, support defect triage, and validate that delivered functionality meets business requirements.
  • Use analytical and data-driven approaches to evaluate complexity, simplify processes, and recommend practical product improvements.
  • Create reports, process models, data mappings, diagrams, and visual documentation to support decision-making and product delivery.
  • Continuously seek ways to improve the client experience, operational efficiency, system usability, and product quality.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, statistics, computer science, information systems, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of business analysis or systems analysis experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in the financial services sector.
  • Hands-on experience supporting custom-developed software applications, including defining new functionality, documenting system behavior, working with software development teams, and supporting custom application enhancements.
  • Proven ability to translate complex business requirements into detailed user stories, acceptance criteria, workflows, data rules, and functional specifications.
  • Experience working directly with software engineers, architects, QA analysts, product owners, and business stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of how to analyze system behavior, data flows, integrations, permissions, validations, business rules, and downstream impacts.
  • Experience supporting QA and delivery teams by reviewing requirements, clarifying expected behavior, validating test scenarios, and participating in defect triage.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to develop detailed business process models, workflow diagrams, and system process flows.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with both business and technical audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Visio.
  • Experience participating in Agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Willingness to attend offshore meetings outside of regular business hours when needed.

Important Experience Requirement
This position requires meaningful experience analyzing and supporting custom-developed business applications. Candidates whose experience is primarily limited to configuring, administering, or customizing off-the-shelf financial software products may not meet the expectations of this role unless they can demonstrate direct involvement in custom software delivery, system analysis, requirements definition, and collaboration with software engineering teams.
We are specifically looking for a candidate who can help define how a system should work, not only how to configure an existing packaged product.
Preferred Experience
  • 4+ years of experience in mortgage technology.
  • 4+ years of experience as a Business Systems Analyst in Mortgage Warehouse Lending technology.
  • Strong understanding of Warehouse Lending workflows, including funding, collateral, treasury, settlement, wires, loan lifecycle management, investor activity, and reporting.
  • Experience supporting SaaS, enterprise, or internally developed financial technology platforms.
  • Experience analyzing integrations between custom applications and third-party financial, mortgage, or loan origination systems.
  • Knowledge of loan origination systems such as Encompass or Empower.
  • Experience with data mapping, APIs, reporting requirements, workflow automation, configurable rules, permissions, and financial transaction processing.
  • Familiarity with Jira and Confluence.
  • Agile methodology knowledge, including experience with Scrum, Kanban, or other Agile practices.
  • Experience working with distributed or offshore development teams.

Core Competencies
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to analysis.
  • Ability to think critically, ask strong questions, and challenge unclear requirements.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work across Product, Engineering, QA, Implementation, Support, and Client Success teams.
  • Ability to work independently on complex and strategic client or product issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong client-service mindset with a focus on delivering practical, high-value solutions.
  • Creative thinking and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to understand both business operations and technical system behavior.

What We Are Looking For

The right candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced product environment, balancing client needs with scalable product design, and partnering closely with technical teams to deliver high-quality custom software.
