What is a software developer?

A Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, tests, and maintains computer programs or applications. They use programming languages to create software solutions that meet user needs, whether for desktop, mobile, or web platforms. Software Developers work closely with other team members such as designers, analysts, and testers to ensure the final product is functional, reliable, and user-friendly. Their responsibilities can range from writing code and fixing bugs to collaborating on system architecture and deploying updates.

What do software developers do?

Software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Their job is to apply the principles of engineering, analytics, and computer science toward the development and testing of all kinds of software and applications. On a day-to-day basis, a software developer helps create and test software from start to finish. They discuss and analyze user requests and requirements, then research and brainstorm practical solutions to meet those needs, and determine the best course of action to create the application. As a software developer, you may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one; you are responsible for a program’s overall framework and must design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks like React or .NET is typically required, along with knowledge of agile methodologies or certifications. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure you can build reliable, maintainable software and adapt to evolving project requirements and technologies.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on team-based projects?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with team members across different time zones, managing code integration from multiple contributors, and maintaining clear communication about project requirements. Effective use of version control systems like Git and regular participation in code reviews can help mitigate these issues. Additionally, adapting to evolving project goals and balancing technical debt with feature development are common hurdles that require strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Job description

Job Description: The Purpose of Your Role as a Software Developer The Software Developer will build and support software that helps teams across the organization work more efficiently. This position combines application development, cloud technology, automation, and emerging AI capabilities to create practical tools that solve real business problems. You will work closely with both technical teams and business stakeholders, turning ideas and challenges into applications and solutions that people can actually use.

What You'll Be Part Of

You’ll work across a variety of software projects, helping develop modern applications while also contributing to how technology is used across the business.

Build and support web applications, APIs, integrations, and data solutions using technologies such as React and JavaScript/TypeScript

Work with business teams to understand their needs, improve processes, and turn those needs into practical technical solutions

Contribute to solution design, testing, deployments, and ongoing application support throughout the development lifecycle

Help lead development efforts on assigned projects while supporting code reviews, technical standards, and knowledge sharing

Explore cloud, AI, automation, and other emerging technologies that could improve how the business operates

You’ll have the opportunity to work on a range of projects while continuing to grow your technical skills and take on more responsibility in the development process.

What We’re Looking For in You

3 to 5 years of experience developing and supporting business applications, APIs, integrations, or cloud solutions

Strong experience with React, JavaScript or TypeScript, relational databases, and modern software development practices

Experience with source control, testing, CI/CD, and software development lifecycle practices

Ability to work through complex problems, handle ambiguity, and develop practical solutions

Strong communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and non technical teams

Experience with Azure, AI, automation, or analytics is a plus

What This Position Is (and Is Not)

This position is:

Focused on building software that solves real business needs

A combination of development, technical problem solving, and collaboration

An opportunity to grow into greater technical leadership through project work and mentoring

This position is not:

Limited to maintaining existing applications

Focused solely on front end development

An isolated coding position with little interaction outside of the technology team

Why This Position Stands Out

This position gives you the opportunity to work across modern software development, cloud technology, and emerging AI capabilities while solving problems that directly impact the business.

You’ll have room to grow technically, take the lead on development projects, and help shape how new technologies are used in practical ways.

If This Sounds Like You

You’re someone who enjoys learning new technologies, works well with others, and takes pride in turning ideas into solutions that people can use.
