The Role


BGC is seeking an experienced Civil Engineering Technologist with a strong background in advanced geotechnical laboratory testing to join our state-of-the-art soil and rock testing facility in Fredericton, New Brunswick. This role is ideal for a highly skilled technologist with demonstrated expertise in critical state soil mechanics, cyclic and monotonic shear testing, and laboratory operations.

Our Fredericton lab specializes in strength, compressibility, and permeability testing of soil and rock using advanced systems such as cyclic dynamic simple shear, servo-controlled triaxial, and automated oedometer equipment. The successful candidate will serve as a technical expert and mentor, overseeing complex testing programs and ensuring high-quality, standards-compliant results.

Responsibilities


  • Perform index testing and advanced geotechnical testing of soil
  • Provide support to BGC projects through interpretation of advanced laboratory testing results and the selection of design parameters
  • Support the execution of laboratory testing programs and managing multiple projects with varying deadlines and responsibilities
  • Prepare laboratory test reports
  • Train and mentor laboratory staff and laboratory visitors
  • Follow lab procedures for safety and quality
  • May support BGC projects with office-based geotechnical analyses, when required

Required Education, Experience & Competencies


  • B.Tech. or Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent education
  • 8+ years of experience in geotechnical laboratory testing and operations
  • 5+ years of experience conducting and interpreting results of each of the following tests:
    • Triaxial testing (CID, CIU, CAD, CAU)
    • Direct simple shear (monotonic and cyclic)
    • Slurry consolidometer, permeability, and SWCC testing
  • Specialized training in geotechnical laboratory systems, critical state soil mechanics, and ISO/IEC 17025 auditing
  • Strong knowledge of ASTM, British Standards, and SANS testing methodologies
  • Proven ability to lead laboratory teams and standardize testing protocols
  • Excellent communication and client engagement skills

Position Requirements


Drug & Alcohol Testing

To ensure we meet our client’s compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position.  The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and/or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.


Driver’s License

BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck.  Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver’s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.
