Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks like React or .NET is typically required, along with knowledge of agile methodologies or certifications. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure you can build reliable, maintainable software and adapt to evolving project requirements and technologies.

Job description

Junior Software Developer [NO RELOCATION]

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE NEEDING TO RELOCATE. WE ARE ONLY HIRING IN PHOENIX.

Phoenix, AZ — onsite · $60,000–$80,000

BusinessRate turns public customer reviews into scores and rankings for local businesses. We collect review data at scale, score each business, rank it against its local competitors, and recognize the top performers in their market.

We're profitable and growing, with an engineering team of four. Everything — the data pipelines, the web applications, the payment flows, the internal tooling, the infrastructure — is built and maintained in house.

The role

You'd be writing code day to day, with your pull requests reviewed carefully and someone senior on hand when you get stuck. We're a small team, so you won't be handed a narrow slice of the product and left there — you'll see how the whole thing fits together, and you'll get more ownership as you show you're ready for it.

The work is genuinely interesting. The data side involves large partitioned tables, queries that need to stay fast as volumes grow, and pipelines processing substantial amounts of data. There's also a customer-facing web application, payment flows, and internal dashboards, all of which need to be reliable.

We're looking for someone who wants to get good at this, not just someone who can already do it.

What you'll do

- Build and maintain backend services and APIs, with support on the design decisions

- Work on our Next.js and tRPC frontends — customer-facing pages and internal dashboards

- Write SQL against large datasets and learn what makes queries fast or slow

- Fix bugs and ship improvements across the product

- Have your pull requests reviewed carefully, and start reviewing others' as you grow

- Take smaller projects from idea through to production

What we're looking for

You should have:

- Working knowledge of TypeScript and Node.js, and something real you've built with them — a job, an internship, a personal project you can walk us through

- Familiarity with SQL and relational databases; you don't need to know how to optimize a query against a partitioned table yet, but you should want to learn

- Experience building with React, ideally Next.js

- Comfort with AI-assisted development tools alongside solid engineering practices — we use them regularly and expect the same care with code written that way

- A willingness to ask questions early rather than disappear for three days

Nice to have:

- tRPC, Fastify, or similar typed API layers

- Docker and modern deployment pipelines (we use Render)

- Stripe or other payments experience

- Any exposure to data pipelines or ETL

- A CS degree, a bootcamp, or no formal background at all — we care about what you can do

Compensation and process

Base salary is $60,000–$80,000, depending on experience.

Health insurance included. This role is onsite in the Phoenix area.

Our process is four steps: an intro call, a technical conversation, an onsite visit, and an offer.

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE NEEDING TO RELOCATE. WE ARE ONLY HIRING IN PHOENIX.
