As a Senior Software Engineer at Optum Technology, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, high-throughput applications and services across the full engineering stack. In this role, you will drive key components of distributed systems, combining front-end expertise in React and TypeScript with back-end strength in Java and Spring Boot. You will collaborate closely with architects and peers, champion DevOps continuous integration and automation practices, and leverage enterprise-approved AI tools to augment development efficiency and streamline engineering workflows.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain high-throughput, distributed back-end services using Java, Spring, Spring Boot, and RESTful APIs.
  • Build and optimize responsive front-end user interfaces using React, JavaScript, TypeScript, and/or Node.js.
  • Contribute across the full-stack engineering layer, delivering scalable architecture and design implementations from UI to database and API integrations.
  • Participate in system design, architecture discussions, and delivery planning in close collaboration with senior engineers and architects.
  • Advance DevOps practices by contributing to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring, and containerization using Docker.
  • Identify technical improvements, refactor legacy components, and apply modern engineering practices to enhance system reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Review peers' code and design proposals, clearly communicate technical concepts, and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks, and drive continuous operational improvement.

Required Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience with front-end web technologies such as React, JavaScript, TypeScript, and/or Node.js
  • 3+ years of experience designing and developing back-end services using Java, Spring, Spring Boot, and RESTful APIs
  • 3+ years of experience working on large-scale, high-throughput, or distributed applications, taking ownership of key components or services
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with full-stack engineering, contributing meaningful design and implementation across both front-end and back-end layers
  • 2+ years of experience contributing to DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automation, monitoring, and containerization (e.g., Docker)
  • 1+ year of experience participating in and influencing system design, architecture discussions, and delivery planning, working closely with senior engineers and architects
  • 1+ year of experience demonstrating ability to identify technical improvements, refactor legacy components, and apply modern engineering practices to improve reliability, scalability, and maintainability
  • 1+ year of experience using communication skills to clearly explain technical concepts, review peers' code and designs, and collaborate effectively across teams

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Azure cloud services, including compute, networking, security, and resiliency concepts
  • Experience supporting or contributing to mobile application backends or cross-platform systems
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and technical guidance
  • Familiarity with observability practices, including logging, metrics, and alerting for production systems
  • Hands-on or practical exposure to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform and/or orchestration platforms such as Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $91,700 - $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
