Field Engineer – Montgomery, AL

Position Description

The Field Engineer (FE) works directly for the Superintendent and is expected to exercise judgment and discretion in making recommendations, implementing policies and procedures and handling a wide variety of matters in the field. The position is normally, but not necessarily preparatory to becoming an Office Engineer or Project Engineer. The primary purpose of the position is to proactively aid the Superintendent in front-line field management. The FE is responsible for the majority of the layout on a project, supervision of trade workers and subcontractor employees, lift drawings, safety, and quality control. Although the majority of a Field Engineer’s time will be spent in the field, some duties will be performed in the field office. This is a safety‑sensitive position.

Essential Duties
  • Project layout (surveying) in conformance with design and contract documents.
  • Check concrete forms for accuracy and adequacy of construction, including all embedded items, before placement of concrete.
  • Perform production trend analysis for quantities of work in place and report for weekly and monthly schedule and cost control reports.
  • Assist with quality control, site safety initiatives and coordination of trade partners as delegated by the project superintendent, including directing a small work force for supervisory experience.
  • Coordinate material deliveries by checking material requirements in advance and comparing with the delivery status; inspect materials delivered to the job for quantity, quality and condition, and report on missing and/or damaged items.
  • Assist foremen and trade partners with interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Oversight of trade partners, as assigned, and direction of workforces (e.g., a labor crew) of employees or trade partner employees for supervisory experience.
  • Participate in job‑site safety meetings, weekly safety audits, etc.
  • Collaborate with the VDC team on VDC scope of work, execution plan and deliverables related to field operations; review and navigate within the current 3D model viewing and scheduling software.
Qualifications
  • A 4‑year degree in Civil, Structural, Architecture or Construction Management.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Computer software proficiency – Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel‑based templates), ProjectSight, Primavera, and Autodesk Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Past internships in the construction industry.
Physical Work Classification & Demands

Moderate Work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The position requires walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, reaching, stooping, reading/seeing, speaking, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and typing. The individual must frequently communicate with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office administration, constantly compute, analyze, and conceptualize mathematical calculations and formulas, regularly sit in front of a computer screen, read written communications and blueprints, climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding and ramps, maintain balance, stoop, and operate a certified vehicle. Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures, noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
