What is a software developer in test (SDET)?

A Software Developer In Test (SDET) is a professional who combines software development and testing skills to ensure the quality of applications. SDETs design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks and tools, and often write code to test software products just as developers write code to create them. They collaborate closely with developers and quality assurance teams to identify issues early in the development process, improving product reliability and efficiency. SDETs are integral in enabling continuous integration and delivery by automating repetitive testing tasks, allowing companies to release software faster and with higher quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer in test (SDET), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer in Test (SDET), a strong background in programming, software testing methodologies, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering is essential. Familiarity with automation frameworks (like Selenium or Cypress), CI/CD tools, and scripting languages (such as Python or Java) is typically required, along with ISTQB or similar certifications being advantageous. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure robust test coverage, high-quality software releases, and efficient collaboration within development teams.

How does a software developer in test (SDET) typically collaborate with developers and QA teams to ensure software quality?

Software Developers in Test (SDETs) play a key role in bridging the gap between development and quality assurance. They often work closely with developers to understand new features and help design testable code, while collaborating with QA teams to automate testing processes and integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines. SDETs participate in code reviews, contribute to test framework improvements, and provide feedback on testability, making their input crucial throughout the development lifecycle. This collaborative approach helps identify issues early and ensures higher software quality before release.

Brooksource is searching for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our enterprise financial services partner in Charlotte, NC. The successful candidate will be a technically sharp developer with experience in TypeScript or JavaScript and either a background or interest in software testing.

This is not a traditional QA role — the right fit is someone who writes clean, maintainable code, thinks like a developer, and actively leverages AI tools to move faster and smarter. You will work across teams, contribute to test automation frameworks, engage with Salesforce CRM integrations, and help shape how quality is built.

What you will do:
  • Be an active member of a Scrum team in an SDET capacity — contributing to sprint planning, standups, and continuous delivery cycles alongside the engineering team.
  • Contribute to and expand the automation testing repository for the Salesforce Lightning Omni-Channel application, writing tests in TypeScript, Playwright, Cucumber (BDD/Gherkin), and JSforce.
  • Use JSforce to interact with Salesforce APIs programmatically and write optimized SOQL queries to support test data setup, validation, and debugging.
  • Perform API validation and exploratory testing using tools such as Insomnia.
  • Integrate and maintain test pipelines within GitLab CI/CD, ensuring reliable and fast feedback loops for the engineering team.
  • Leverage AI tools — including Claude Code and MCP server integrations — as a core part of your daily engineering workflow to accelerate development and improve output quality.
  • Bring architecture ideas and propose improvements to the test automation framework to raise overall quality standards and maintainability.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders across disciplines; contribute to documentation in Confluence and task tracking in Jira.
  • Proactively identify automation gaps, technical debt, and quality risks — and own driving them to resolution.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of professional technical experience as a Software Developer, SDET, or similar
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and/or JavaScript development
  • Either hands-on experience with Playwright for end-to-end test automation, or else fundamental understanding and a strong interest in building this skillset.
  • Experience or understanding of Cucumber / Gherkin BDD syntax
  • Familiarity with GitLab (version control, CI/CD pipelines, merge requests).
  • Comfortable working with Jira and Confluence in an agile environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to debug across the stack.
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Skills:
  • Direct experience with Salesforce Lightning CRM — case management, workflow automation, and third-party integrations.
  • SOQL / SQL proficiency; ability to write complex queries against Salesforce objects.
  • Experience with JSforce or other Salesforce API libraries.
  • API testing expertise using Insomnia or similar tools (REST, SOAP, GraphQL).
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows, prompt engineering, and MCP server usage.
  • Exposure to contact center or financial services technology platforms.
Who You Are:
  • An engineer who is highly technical, curious, and eager to grow.
  • A professional with a background or a strong interest in building software testing and automation into your future career path.
  • Open-minded and adaptive - comfortable wearing multiple hats in a cross-functional environment.
  • Proactive: you identify problems before they become incidents and propose solutions.
  • AI-native: you naturally reach for AI tools to accelerate and enhance your work.
  • Not afraid to own quality responsibilities as an integral part of broader engineering work.
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, and driven by an inherent curiosity to understand how systems work - and how they can break.
