What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Developer Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), data structures, algorithms, and often enrollment in a computer science or related degree program. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes cloud platforms or collaborative tools is common. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills set exceptional interns apart. These competencies are crucial for contributing to projects, adapting quickly, and maximizing learning opportunities in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Job description

Software Engineer Intern

Layer is looking for a Software Engineer Intern to join our team for 2025 and beyond. You will work with a small team on a web application designed for AECO professionals to access building data across the entire lifecycle of a building.

We are looking for:

  • Current Students - we want to work with degree-seeking students who plan to graduate in 2025, 2026, or 2027 with a degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science
  • Problem Solvers - we want you to be passionate about solving problems for our customers and for our customer support team.
  • Learners - we want you to have a desire to learnโ€”not only about web development but about our product, our engineering practices and our customers

As a Software Engineer Intern, you will be doing web development in TypeScript, HTML, CSS and Node.js. You will work with a small development team planning new features and improving our product for our users. We regularly ship new features to production and we want you to make an immediate impact.

Our application is a progressive web application designed to work on most desktop & mobile devices. On the front end we use a mix of Angular and React (depending on the context). Our back end is Firebase + Google Cloud.

This internship will run from October 2025 - May or August 2026.

We are:

  • Focused - we are extremely protective of your time. You'll spend more time building and less time in meetings.
  • Balanced - no nights and no weekends.
  • Relaxed - no dress code. Those of us in the Lincoln/Omaha area take a hybrid approach and work in-office 1-2 times per week. We have employees in 3 different time zones.

Some Examples:

  • Drag and drop PDF Report builder
  • Export project data into a template and reuse it across any project in a user's organization
  • A native Barcode Scanner plugin for iOS that integrates with our progressive web app
  • The Layer API
  • A full project data sync (client first) using Replicache

Compensation & Benefits

We offer a competitive compensation package that includes benefits like remote working, flexible schedule, unlimited vacation, and 401k match.

This role is an hourly position. The expected pay range for this role is $25-30/hr depending on experience.

Details

Part-time, 10-20 hrs/week. Hybrid - Lincoln area with two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday, typically) in our Lincoln office and the rest remote.
