What are Software Developer Contractors?

Software Developer Contractors are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to design, develop, and maintain software applications for clients or companies. Unlike full-time employees, contractors typically work under a contract for a specific period or for the duration of a project. They may work independently, through agencies, or as part of a consulting firm, and often have specialized skills to meet specific project needs. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the developer and the employer, allowing organizations to scale their technical resources as needed.

What is the difference between Software Developer Contractor vs Software Developer Employee?

AspectSoftware Developer ContractorSoftware Developer Employee
CredentialsTypically requires a relevant degree and technical skills; certifications optionalSame as contractor, often with additional company-specific training
Work EnvironmentContract-based, often remote or on-site for short-term projectsFull-time, usually on-site or hybrid
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in tech firms, startups, consulting agenciesStandard in large corporations, tech companies, and organizations

Software Developer Contractors work on short-term projects, often remotely, with flexible arrangements, while Software Developer Employees are full-time staff with ongoing responsibilities and benefits. Both roles require similar skills and credentials but differ mainly in employment status and work setup.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Developer Contractor, and why are they important?

To excel as a Software Developer Contractor, you need strong programming abilities, problem-solving skills, and a solid understanding of software development methodologies, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer. Excellent communication, time management, and adaptability set top contractors apart, enabling them to quickly integrate with diverse teams and projects. These skills are essential for delivering high-quality, timely solutions in dynamic and varied client environments.

What are some common challenges software developer contractors face when integrating with existing teams?

Software developer contractors often join projects mid-stream and must quickly adapt to unfamiliar codebases, workflows, and team dynamics. A common challenge is building rapport with full-time staff and understanding company-specific coding standards or tools. Contractors are expected to be proactive in communicating, asking questions, and clarifying requirements to ensure smooth collaboration. Being flexible and open to feedback helps contractors deliver quality work while navigating these initial hurdles.

Job description

Company
Braintrust is a global talent network that connects top independent professionals with leading companies for high-quality, flexible work. We help organizations hire skilled talent faster while giving professionals access to vetted opportunities with innovative teams.Job description

This role is initially structured as a six-month contract engagement, with the opportunity to convert to a full-time employee (FTE) position based on performance, business needs, and mutual fit.

Link Logistics Real Estate (“Link”) is a leading operator of warehouses and business parks, specializing in last-mile logistics real estate. Established by Blackstone in 2019, the company connects consumption, technology, and the supply chain across its portfolio, which spans half a billion square feet. We leverage our scale, proprietary data and insights, and foundational focus on sustainability to drive success for our customers’ businesses and deliver value for our stakeholders. We put our people, customers, and communities first and find ways to make a conscious, positive impact where we live and work. Every day, we work to reinvent and lead our industry forward by thinking bigger and challenging the status quo.

We're hiring a full-stack Software Engineer to help build Link's investment analytics platform. You'll own significant pieces of the infrastructure, make real architectural decisions, and work directly with the business teams who depend on what you build.

This is not a role where requirements get handed down. You'll identify problems, design solutions, and ship — often in the same week. You'll need to be comfortable with ambiguity, confident making judgment calls independently, and energized by the kind of work where there's no established playbook.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build and own the platform — design and maintain the application infrastructure, API layer, and shared services that power Link's Analytics Engine end-to-end. Microsoft Azure experience is preferred.
  • Set the technical foundation — make early architectural decisions that will shape how the platform scales; know when to move fast and when to get it right.
  • Develop full-stack applications that surface ML insights and advanced analytics through intuitive, responsive interfaces built in React and TypeScript. C# and SQL experience is valuable.
  • Improve developer velocity — own the build, deploy, and testing pipeline and continuously reduce friction for the team.
  • Integrate AI-native workflows — build tools, prompts, and evals that put real analytical leverage in the hands of investment teams.
  • Work directly with stakeholders — engage with investment, asset management, and capital markets teams to understand problems, gather feedback, and iterate without waiting for someone else to translate.
  • Lead by doing — mentor contractors and interns, set a high standard through code reviews, and bring teammates along without slowing down.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of full-stack development experience, ideally including time in an early-stage or 0→1 environment
  • Proven ability to ship end-to-end independently — from scoping a problem to deploying production code — without needing a designer, PM, or architect to unblock you
  • Experience shipping LLM-native features or applications in production
  • Expert-level React skills: modern patterns (hooks, context, suspense), performance optimization, and component architecture
  • Strong backend proficiency in Python or Node.js; fluent in designing and maintaining scalable APIs
  • Sharp product instincts and a track record of making smart scope and architecture tradeoffs under pressure
  • Direct, low-ego communicator — comfortable with hard feedback from internal users and fast to incorporate it

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience building ML-powered application workflows and integrating data science outputs
  • Familiarity with MCP or production LLM integrations
  • Background at an AI-native company or in a product-focused founding environment
  • Experience in real estate, finance, or other data-intensive industries
