What are Software Developer Contractors?

Software Developer Contractors are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to design, develop, and maintain software applications for clients or companies. Unlike full-time employees, contractors typically work under a contract for a specific period or for the duration of a project. They may work independently, through agencies, or as part of a consulting firm, and often have specialized skills to meet specific project needs. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the developer and the employer, allowing organizations to scale their technical resources as needed.

What is the difference between Software Developer Contractor vs Software Developer Employee?

AspectSoftware Developer ContractorSoftware Developer Employee
CredentialsTypically requires a relevant degree and technical skills; certifications optionalSame as contractor, often with additional company-specific training
Work EnvironmentContract-based, often remote or on-site for short-term projectsFull-time, usually on-site or hybrid
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in tech firms, startups, consulting agenciesStandard in large corporations, tech companies, and organizations

Software Developer Contractors work on short-term projects, often remotely, with flexible arrangements, while Software Developer Employees are full-time staff with ongoing responsibilities and benefits. Both roles require similar skills and credentials but differ mainly in employment status and work setup.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Developer Contractor, and why are they important?

To excel as a Software Developer Contractor, you need strong programming abilities, problem-solving skills, and a solid understanding of software development methodologies, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript are commonly required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer. Excellent communication, time management, and adaptability set top contractors apart, enabling them to quickly integrate with diverse teams and projects. These skills are essential for delivering high-quality, timely solutions in dynamic and varied client environments.

What are some common challenges software developer contractors face when integrating with existing teams?

Software developer contractors often join projects mid-stream and must quickly adapt to unfamiliar codebases, workflows, and team dynamics. A common challenge is building rapport with full-time staff and understanding company-specific coding standards or tools. Contractors are expected to be proactive in communicating, asking questions, and clarifying requirements to ensure smooth collaboration. Being flexible and open to feedback helps contractors deliver quality work while navigating these initial hurdles.

Job description

Description:

We are seeking a skilled Software Developer to design and implement customer-focused software solutions for Omni CleanAir and across the Silver Falls Capital portfolio of manufacturing companies. Working alongside our CTO and senior engineers, you will contribute to the development of our Strata47 IoT platform and play an active role in technical projects that drive digital advantage across our portfolio.

In this position, you will work with increasing autonomy as you grow, leveraging your problem-solving abilities and software craft. Your primary objective will be to develop high-quality software solutions that meet user needs and align with our business goals – analyzing requirements, contributing to architecture discussions, writing efficient code, and conducting thorough testing. You will be a key contributor helping ensure the Strata47 IoT platform provides growing capability that our portfolio operating companies leverage to gain a digital edge.

Key Success Factors:

  • Deliver reliable, well-tested software features on time and to specification
  • Contribute meaningfully to the Strata47 IoT platform, expanding its capability for portfolio companies
  • Demonstrate increasing independence in taking requirements from concept to production
  • Apply AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to accelerate output without compromising quality or security
  • Communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Build strong working relationships across portfolio company teams

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications and services across web, API, and IoT domains using our core tech stack (TypeScript, React, Node.js, Cloudflare Workers)
  • Contribute to the architecture and evolution of the Strata47 IoT platform, including device integration, data pipelines, and customer-facing dashboards
  • Integrate with enterprise APIs including Salesforce, Microsoft Graph, and ERP systems to support business process automation across portfolio companies
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-documented code and participate in code reviews to uphold quality standards
  • Deploy and monitor cloud-hosted services, contributing to tooling that ensures high-availability and observability
  • Collaborate with the CTO and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, bugs, and technical debt in a timely manner
  • Participate in agile development processes including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives
  • Support cross-portfolio technology initiatives, bringing your skills to bear on projects at Sportworks, Bird Buffer, Omni CleanAir, and CITC as needed
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This is an individual contributor role with no direct supervisory responsibilities at this time. As the team grows, there may be opportunities to mentor junior developers or coordinate with contractors

AI-Assisted Development:

We believe AI coding agents are a fundamental shift in how great software gets built. We expect our developers to be skilled practitioners of these tools – not just occasional users. This means:

  • Proven, hands-on experience with AI coding agents such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or equivalent tools in a production software context
  • Deep understanding of how to frame tasks effectively for AI agents, review AI-generated code critically, and integrate it safely into production systems
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks introduced by AI-assisted development: hallucinated logic, security vulnerabilities, licensing concerns, and over-reliance on unverified output
  • A mature sense of when to lean on AI acceleration and when to step back and reason through problems independently
  • Experience using AI tooling to accelerate code reviews, test generation, documentation, and refactoring tasks

Our Tech Stack:

We build primarily with TypeScript, React, and Node.js, deploying to Cloudflare Workers and other serverless platforms. Our data layer uses PostgreSQL, and we build both REST and GraphQL APIs depending on the use case.

Our internal business applications integrate with Salesforce and Microsoft Graph to support operations across our portfolio companies. Our customer-facing products – including the Strata47 IoT platform – connect with a wide variety of ecosystem systems and third-party APIs, so the ability to rapidly understand, integrate with, and build reliable connections to external APIs is essential for this role.

Proficiency in this stack is expected; deep expertise in all areas is not required on day one, but a genuine commitment to mastering it is.

Expected Behaviors Aligned with Cultural Values:

  • Teamwork Matters – Demonstrate low ego and a wins-or-fails-together mindset. Leverage your expertise generously across the team and portfolio companies. Hold yourself and others to consistent accountability, and bring fierce resolve when the work gets hard
  • Is Curious, Takes Action – Think critically and learn from failures rather than repeating them. Go to the GENBA – understand problems at the source before proposing solutions. Hold thoughtful convictions, stay agile with change, and benchmark relentlessly against the best
  • Sets a High Bar – Think bigger than the immediate task. Be impatient with the status quo and push for stretch goals over safe ones. Focus on outcomes and results, not just activity – progress is valued, but progress toward the right things
  • Champions the SFW – Embrace, implement, and actively improve The Silver Falls Way. Master the tools and principles of how we operate, and become a teacher – helping others around you grow into the framework
  • Acts with Respect & Integrity – Be self-aware, responsible, and truthful. Build trust by being internally consistent – say what you mean, do what you say. Do the right thing always, even when no one is watching

Required Education, Experience and Skills:

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript; comfortable with React, Node.js, and modern front-end development practices
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs; understanding of authentication patterns (OAuth, JWT)
  • Solid working knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred) and data modeling
  • Experience deploying and operating services in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP, or Cloudflare)
  • Demonstrated experience using AI coding agents (e.g. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) in a professional development context, with a mature understanding of associated risks
  • Familiarity with agile/scrum methodologies and version control (Git)
  • Comfortable with rapid experimentation cycles – favouring fast, low-risk iterations that generate real-world feedback over lengthy upfront design
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a disciplined approach to debugging
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Self-directed with experience thriving in ambiguous, fast-growth environments

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Familiarity with Cloudflare Workers or other edge/serverless compute platforms
  • Experience with IoT systems, time-series data, or industrial/manufacturing software environments
  • Knowledge of Remix or similar full-stack web frameworks
  • Exposure to Drizzle ORM or similar TypeScript-native data access layers
  • Experience working across multiple products or business units simultaneously
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Being physically present and available at our Monroe, WA location
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times

Compensation & Benefits
In addition to competitive pay, we offer a comprehensive benefits package to support the health and wellbeing of our employees.

Benefits include:

  • Paid holidays and paid time off
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage (with employer contribution to each)
  • Simple IRA with 3% employer match
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Life Insurance and AD&D plans
  • ORCA Passport benefit for new hires
