Broadcast Engineer III

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Broadcast Engineer III works under the direction of the Broadcast Engineering Manager/Director, assisting with all aspects of the technical operation. This position also has direct involvement in all aspects of supporting the live production including set up, operation, and maintaining a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment involved in the television broadcast and postproduction, musical recording or television show. This is a Full-Time position where the candidate must have the ability to work flexible schedules including weekends and Holidays.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Install and/or modify technical equipment and systems.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation for operational and troubleshooting purposes.
  • Design and manufacture hardware and systems.
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance and emergency repairs of video, audio and radio frequency (RF) systems, including satellite and wireless equipment.
  • Work closely with production staff and other resource departments to ensure that operational and other production needs are effectively and efficiently met.
  • Identify and implement alternative ways of meeting program output and other requirements to cover equipment failures with minimum loss of services.
  • Handling all auction software. Highlight problems and identify areas of possible future improvement of possible problems.
  • Provide user support and maintain desktop editing systems, technical desktop systems, and IT infrastructure as related to the live broadcast environment.
  • Maintain the smooth running of the operation in the studio, covering program and maintenance needs.
  • Install and maintain video, audio, RF and computer equipment. These systems include all broadcast equipment including but are not limited to studio camera and switching systems, video monitors and technical measurement devices, videotape machines and systems, disc-based video file servers and automation systems, as well as electronic graphic systems and internal auction management system.
  • Maintain and change studio lights when necessary.
  • Advise operational and production staff on the technical capabilities of broadcast engineering systems and equipment to assist them to achieve particular results.
  • Cover technical operations crew brakes and absences.
  • Must be proficient with and have a good understanding of satellite and headend signal distribution to affiliates in order to achieve quick response time when troubleshooting transmission outages.
  • Respond to outage calls from operations team 24/7.
  • Record all visual output for FCC regulations.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for all technology within the broadcast facility.
  • Lead initial response to any technical issues.

SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum two-year program; formally certified or degreed training in electronics, RF, with computer technology, through college, university, accredited technical school, or military training.
  • Minimum Five years of experience in the broadcast/Production engineering field with a working knowledge of digital/analog studio, remote, and transmission equipment and related facilities.
  • Must have a practical knowledge of hazardous voltages, towers, ground system, generators, and hazardous fuel storage.
  • Ability to multi-task and work long hours and able to respond in a timely โ€œon-callโ€ capacity.
  • Dependable and flexible, ability to work in 24/7 environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like.
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 40 pounds in all directions.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.

EDUCATION:
  • Preferred: Technical school, community college, or college training in electronics, computer networking, or broadcast technology, certified or degreed training in electronics, RF, computer technology, through college, university, accredited technical school, or military training.

  • FCC General Radiotelephone, SBE Broadcast Certification, CET Certifications, and MCSE.
