Northrop Grumman's Defense Systems (NGDS) sector is looking for a Mgr. Software Engineering 1 to lead a team of talented software engineers and ensure quality engineering support to programs, IRADs and new business pursuits in the Weapons Integration & Mission Solutions (WIMS) Business Unit. The location of this position is Beavercreek, OH. The Software Engineering Manager will be working alongside fellow engineering professionals as we continue to provide engineering solutions for our customers. The position supports the engineering organization goals for providing people, processes and tools to meet the current and future needs of the programs and technologies within the sector portfolio. This role will help foster the establishment and maintenance of a world class Software and Digital Technologies organization.
The selected candidate will provide functional leadership to the team in a strong engineering organization, collaborating with peers across multiple organizations. The successful candidate will clearly demonstrate strong leadership skills to achieve sustainable top performance. The candidate will have a track record as an effective communicator and problem solver who is able to develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. This candidate will demonstrate a commitment to ethics and integrity, and the capability to innovate while challenging traditional ways of doing business. Demonstrated abilities to build diverse and inclusive teams with high levels of engagement, including mentoring and coaching, are a must.
The selected candidate will also actively participate in engineering or Scrum Master activities related to our Intelligence, Systems, Infrastructure, Tools & Enhancements (InSITE) Program as well as other relevant Northrop Grumman Defense Systems programs. The candidate will have a track record as an effective team member with excellent engineering skills.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science or other STEM discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience in engineering development projects or Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience in engineering development projects
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmentalized Information (SCI) clearance
  • Experience with the implementation and delivery of sophisticated engineering solutions in support of customer requirements
  • Previous experience in people and/or technical leadership roles
  • Experience in one of the following areas:
    • Experience working as a software engineer performing full stack development
      • Experience writing software applications using Java, Go, or Python
      • Experience working with web applications and front-end frameworks such as Angular, React, or Vue
    • Experience working in an agile Scrum Master role
      • Proven track record of facilitating Sprint Planning, Daily Scrums, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective ceremonies on a consistent basis
      • Proficiency with common Agile tooling (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps, Confluence, Miro) for backlog refinement, sprint tracking, and reporting
      • Demonstrated ability to coach development teams toward self-organization, continuous improvement, and high-quality delivery

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active TS/SCI Security Clearance
  • Experience leading a team in the Engineering department of a matrix-like organization
  • Knowledge of AFRL/RI contracting process and procedures
  • Experience working with National Air Space Intelligence Center (NASIC), National Space Intelligence Center (NSIC), Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Air Combat Command (ACC) or Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).
  • Experience working with multiple subcontractors concurrently
  • Business development and/or proposal experience
  • If experienced as a software engineer:
    • Experience developing containerized software applications using Docker, Podman, and Kubernetes
    • Experience working with medium to large scale, cloud-based microservice applications
    • Knowledge or experience of the zero-trust security model and PKI-based authentication using X.509 certificates
    • Experience with continuous integration / continuous deployment (CI/CD) using Gitlab
  • If experienced as an agile Scrum Master:
    • Advanced Scrum Alliance credentials (A-CSM, CSP-SM)
    • Direct experience with Program Increment (PI) Planning or other quarterly cadence events in a multi-team context
    • Track record of leading cross-team dependency management and integration activities (e.g., Scrum of Scrums, PO Sync)
    • Familiarity with Lean-Agile metrics such as cumulative flow diagrams, velocity trends, predictability measures, and the ability to translate them into actionable improvement plans
    • Ability to run conflict-resolution and facilitation workshops for senior leadership and technical stakeholders
    • Knowledge of DevOps practices (CI/CD pipelines, automated testing) and how they integrate with Scrum ceremonies

Primary Level Salary Range: $121,000.00 - $181,400.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
