What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an outstanding R&D Scientist & Engineer (S&E) in Computer Science who is passionate about applying software development, DevSecOps, configuration management, and problem-solving skills to address some of the most challenging national security problems. This role is embedded within a highly integrated team that delivers reliable, software-intensive solutions supporting Sandia's mission-critical programs across Global Security, National Security Programs, and Advanced Science & Technology.
As a pivotal contributor, you will advance software development and operational deployment capabilities with a strong focus on configuration management, software integration, and production environment readiness. You will ensure that software and AI solutions developed by partner organizations are properly installed, configured, integrated, tested, and maintained within mission-critical environments, directly supporting Sandia's commitment to accelerating mission delivery and success.
Join our agile, multidisciplinary team of creative problem solvers dedicated to accelerating research and development, strengthening production software environments, and delivering secure, advanced software solutions that contribute to national security.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a software developer, DevSecOps engineer, configuration engineer, and technical integrator, performing hands-on software development, automation, and system integration tasks.
  • Collaborate closely with team members and mission partners to identify technical needs and goals, effectively documenting and communicating findings, risks, and best practices.
  • Manage and support the deployment of software and AI solutions across diverse environments, ensuring proper configuration, integration, and reliable delivery.
  • Develop and enhance deployment scripts, automation workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and operational documentation to streamline software delivery and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve installation, integration, configuration, performance, and environment-related issues across multiple platforms and mission domains.

*The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance (within 50 miles) for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary and it requires 60%+ onsite attendance.
Salary Range
$102,400 - $199,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D Computer Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • Degree in Computer Science or a highly related field with a strong focus on software development and software deployment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipeline development, automation tooling, and environment configuration.
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, or C++) and experience developing production-quality software.
  • Strong background in configuration management tools and practices.
  • Hands-on experience integrating, deploying, and maintaining software and production systems in complex or mission critical environments.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex installation, integration, and performance issues across diverse operating systems and platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to document processes, collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams, and convey technical details clearly.

  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.

Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
