Software Architect Internship information

What is a software architect internship?

A Software Architect Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to learn about designing the structure and high-level components of software systems. Interns work under experienced software architects to gain hands-on experience in planning, modeling, and guiding the technical aspects of software projects. The internship typically involves tasks like creating architectural diagrams, researching technologies, and collaborating with development teams. It provides valuable exposure to best practices in software design and architecture, preparing interns for advanced roles in software engineering.

What do software architect interns do?

As a Software Architect Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that involve designing and evaluating software systems under the guidance of experienced architects. Your responsibilities may include assisting in creating technical documentation, participating in architectural reviews, and collaborating with cross-functional teams such as developers, QA engineers, and product managers. This role often provides opportunities to learn about best practices in system design, scalability, and integration, which are essential for advancing toward senior architectural positions. Interns are typically encouraged to contribute ideas and ask questions, making it a valuable environment for professional growth.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a software architect intern?

To thrive as a Software Architect Intern, you need a solid grounding in software design principles, programming languages like Java or Python, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools such as UML modeling software, version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork set standout interns apart. These skills are crucial for contributing to robust architectural solutions and collaborating effectively within development teams.

We made history and now we work to transform the future - for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.
In this position...
You will be a key member of the Electronics Platform Architecture organization, in the Architecture Integration team. The Architecture Integration team owns definition of the complete vehicle electrical architecture. We work with various teams including the Tech Platform Program (TPP), program system, software teams, various ECU delivery teams and the vehicle architecture teams to fully define the architectural content of the platform and for each program. Key work areas for the team include developing a comprehensive architectural specification for upcoming (yet to launch) vehicle programs and work with various functional teams to validate and document Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Your team is responsible defining the evolution of Ford's electrical architectures.
Responsibilities
What you'll do...
  • Own the definition of the core vehicle electrical hardware architecture for each vehicle program from program creation through post launch.
  • Capture the content of the electrical and software architecture, for defining updates to the platform to support program specific features and functions and for leading the resolution of architectural issues on the programs.
  • Work with various functional teams on the electrical architectural KPIs such as packaging, manufacturing, latency, power utilization (including Key-Off Load), network bandwidth, CPU Utilization, etc.
  • Resolve electrical architectural issues from pre-launch through post launch of the new programs and architecture.
  • Design the future computing platforms, tying into the overall sophisticated EE architectures that drive the company.
  • Be involved Ford's development of sophisticated computing solutions for our next generation EE architectures.

Qualifications
You'll have...
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience with automotive electrical architectures
  • 1+ years of experience with automotive microcontrollers and/or microprocessors (coursework/internship/co-op experience allowed)
  • 1+ years of experience with simulation tools including MATLAB, Simulink, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills to break down problems and design effective solutions within the model.

Even better, you may have...
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Compute Engineering
  • 5+ years' experience with automotive electrical architectures
  • 3+ years' experience with simulation tools including MATLAB, Simulink, etc.
  • Detailed understanding of vehicle electrical systems and electrical design/development process, including GPDS
  • Experience with automotive and/or other advanced networking
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262
  • Familiarity with vehicle I/O
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, effectively explaining complex subjects to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
  • Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
