How much do soft condensed matter physics jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 3, 2026, the average hourly pay for soft condensed matter physics in the United States is $17.85, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $9.86 and $19.95 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is soft condensed matter physics?

Soft condensed matter physics is a branch of physics that studies materials which are easily deformed by external forces, thermal fluctuations, or internal stresses. These materials include liquids, polymers, gels, foams, colloids, and biological materials like membranes and proteins. Unlike hard condensed matter (such as metals and crystals), soft matter systems exhibit complex behavior due to their intermediate order and sensitivity to environmental conditions. Research in this field helps us understand the physical principles behind everyday materials and biological processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a soft condensed matter physicist?

To thrive as a Soft Condensed Matter Physicist, you need a solid background in physics, mathematics, and materials science, usually supported by a Ph.D. in physics or a related field. Familiarity with simulation software (such as MATLAB or COMSOL), experimental techniques, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration and communication skills help distinguish top performers in this area. These skills and qualities are essential for advancing research, interpreting complex phenomena, and contributing to multidisciplinary teams in both academic and industrial settings.

What are some common collaborative projects or interdisciplinary opportunities for professionals in soft condensed matter physics?

Professionals in soft condensed matter physics often collaborate with researchers in materials science, chemistry, biology, and engineering. Such interdisciplinary projects may involve studying the properties of polymers for medical devices, analyzing colloidal suspensions in food science, or developing new materials for energy storage. Working in this field typically means being part of a diverse research team, attending cross-disciplinary meetings, and contributing your expertise to broader scientific challenges. These collaborations not only enrich your research experience but also open up varied career paths in both academia and industry.

What is the difference between Soft Condensed Matter Physics vs Materials Scientist?

AspectSoft Condensed Matter PhysicsMaterials Scientist
Required CredentialsPhysics degree, PhD often preferredMaterials science or engineering degree, often with PhD
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, academiaIndustrial labs, manufacturing, research & development
Industry UsageFundamental research, academia, specialized industriesProduct development, materials innovation, manufacturing

Soft Condensed Matter Physics focuses on understanding the physical properties of soft materials like polymers, colloids, and biological materials through fundamental research. Materials Scientists apply this knowledge to develop and improve materials for practical applications in industry. While both roles require a strong background in physics or materials science, Soft Condensed Matter Physicists often work in academic or research settings, whereas Materials Scientists are more industry-oriented.

How much do soft condensed matter physicists make?

Soft condensed matter physicists typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Salaries can increase with advanced research skills, publications, and positions in academia or industry research labs.

Is soft condensed matter physics in demand?

Soft condensed matter physics is a specialized field with demand primarily in academia, research institutions, and industries such as materials science, biotechnology, and nanotechnology. Job opportunities often require advanced degrees and expertise in experimental and theoretical techniques, with demand influenced by technological advancements and research funding.

Job Title: Physics Expert – Professor / Principal Investigator

Role Type: Contractor
Location: Remote

Job Overview

We are seeking established Physics Professors and Principal Investigators to provide high-level scientific expertise for a project focused on advancing next-generation AI systems. In this role, you will apply deep subject-matter expertise to evaluate competing physics arguments, assess technical reasoning, and provide authoritative judgments on complex or ambiguous scientific questions.

The ideal candidate brings a strong record of independent research, scholarly impact, and scientific leadership. No prior AI experience is required—your physics expertise, research judgment, and ability to evaluate complex scientific reasoning are what matter most.

Scope of Work
  • Adjudicate contested or competing physics arguments, solutions, and interpretations within your area of expertise.
  • Compare alternative approaches to complex physics problems and explain which approach is stronger, under what assumptions, and within which applicable regimes.
  • Identify and articulate meta-level criteria for evaluating the robustness, validity, and scientific soundness of competing solutions.
  • Assess key assumptions, approximations, limitations, failure modes, and breaking points within technical arguments.
  • Provide calibrated expert judgments, distinguishing established conclusions from genuine uncertainty, unresolved questions, or active areas of research.
  • Draft rigorous, defensible written evaluations suitable for review by senior physicists and research professionals.
  • Use technical tools such as LaTeX, SymPy, Python, and Jupyter to verify calculations, test assumptions, or compare technical claims where appropriate.
  • Clearly explain when a question remains unresolved within the field and identify the relevant scientific considerations.
  • Contribute expert feedback and domain-level reasoning to support AI model training, evaluation, and improvement.
Required Skills
  • Physics Mastery
  • Expert Judgment in Ambiguous Cases
  • Meta-Level Reasoning
  • Research Leadership
  • Defensible Written Articulation
  • Scientific Analysis
  • Technical Evaluation
  • Research Communication
  • Critical Thinking
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Physics with demonstrated expertise and scholarly impact in a specific physics subfield.
  • Current or former Associate Professor, Full Professor, Chair Professor, Principal Investigator, or Research Group Leader with a strong record of independent research leadership.
  • Active or recent research experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • High Energy Physics
    • Mathematical Physics
    • Biophysics
    • Statistical Physics
    • Condensed Matter Physics
    • AMO / Quantum Optics
    • Gravitation
    • Cosmology
    • Astrophysics
    • Quantum Information
    • Optical Properties of Materials
  • 3–5 recent representative publications in the target research area, with arXiv or DOI references available.
  • Experience supervising PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, or equivalent research leadership in an industry setting.
  • Proficiency with LaTeX, SymPy, Python, and Jupyter; candidates should be prepared to indicate any gaps in experience with these tools.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate nuanced scientific judgments clearly and rigorously.
  • Demonstrated ability to distinguish between established scientific knowledge, reasonable interpretations, and genuinely unresolved questions.
