As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for sofc in the United States is $18.40, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $20.91 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) engineers in their daily work?

SOFC engineers often encounter challenges such as material degradation at high operating temperatures, managing system integration with other energy sources, and ensuring long-term reliability of the fuel cell stacks. Additionally, troubleshooting performance issues and optimizing efficiency while keeping costs manageable are frequent aspects of the role. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including materials scientists and electrical engineers, is essential to address these technical hurdles and develop innovative solutions.

What are SOFCs?

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) are a type of electrochemical device that converts chemical energy from fuels, such as hydrogen or natural gas, directly into electricity. They operate at high temperatures (typically 600°C to 1,000°C) and use a solid oxide or ceramic electrolyte. SOFCs are known for their high efficiency, fuel flexibility, and low emissions, making them suitable for a range of applications from small-scale residential power generation to large-scale industrial use. However, their high operating temperatures can present material and cost challenges. Ongoing research aims to make SOFCs more affordable and durable for widespread use.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, materials, or mechanical engineering, often with an advanced degree and experience in electrochemistry or energy systems. Familiarity with modeling software (such as COMSOL or ANSYS), fuel cell testing equipment, and relevant safety certifications is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for driving innovation and troubleshooting complex issues. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and innovative development of SOFC technologies in a rapidly evolving energy sector.

From revolutionizing power for AI-driven data centers to ensuring resilience for hospitals, electric grids, manufacturing facilities, and utilities, our solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEC) technologies are redefining what's possible by delivering energy abundance for all. With more than 30,000 fuel cell modules deployed worldwide, we are the trusted partner for Fortune 100 companies and innovators alike. Our cutting-edge solutions enable unparalleled "time-to-power" capabilities, reliability, and sustainability, ensuring our customers remain ahead in a world where soaring energy demand and intensifying energy scarcity are rapidly becoming the new norm.
At Bloom, we thrive on collaboration, bold thinking, and relentless innovation. We believe that, together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future while tackling the most pressing challenges of the 21st century.
We are looking for a Sr. Staff Engineer, Cell Development to join our team in one of today's most exciting technologies. This role will be based in Sunnyvale, CA
This is a fully on-site, in office role.
Role and Responsibilities:
• Work within the stack engineering team to develop new SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) materials and components, and lead the implementation of new technologies in production
• Draw on extensive expertise in electrochemistry and high temperature materials to identify promising materials, define functional requirements, establish and execute characterization studies on the component and stack level, and evaluate performance and degradation against established metrics
• Develop new materials and processes for solid oxide fuel cell electrodes, electrolytes, seals, and coatings
• Evaluate new inks, powders, and processing methods. Establish new component-level testing, test equipment, and testing protocols as appropriate to study performance, robustness, and degradation mechanisms. Prepare and test fuel cell components and stacks
• Plan and conduct DOEs of fuel cells and stacks, analyze data, and communicate the results to the technical team
• Work with cross-functional teams to define component specifications. Work with raw material and component suppliers to meet technical requirements, and execute continuous improvement plans for performance, cost, yield, and reliability
• Apply statistical techniques to analyze production and/or field data to learn about product performance, reliability, and yield
• Conduct cross-functional FMEA reviews (failure mode and effects analysis) to quantify risks of new technologies and processes, identify risk mitigations, and lead risks to closure
Skills and Experience:
• PhD degree in Materials Science & Engineering, chemical engineering, inorganic chemistry, or related areas.
• 0-3 yrs post-graduate experience in developing and characterizing SOFC materials
• Very strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively within cross-functional teams, in a fluid and fast-paced environment
