Job SummaryThe School of Social Workat the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for three, full-time, tenure-track AssistantProfessor positions beginning August 2026.
These 9-month faculty positions will be based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, while some teaching assignments may take place on our Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Mississippi.These positions will teach in both the undergraduateand graduate programs. Tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in an active research agenda thatcontributes to the profession, and support the School, College, and Universitythrough service.
Theselected candidate will become part of a faculty dedicated to developing highlyskilled graduates equipped to serve all communities, spanning rural, urban,and suburban areas in the Gulf-South region. We create dynamic classrooms wherecritical thinking thrives through hands-on, student-centered learning. Facultymembers maintain active research programs in childhood obesity, geriatricworkforce development, human trafficking, integrated health, and reproductivejustice while providing training in evidence-based practices.
Faculty are expected toteach in both the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW)programs. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredits both degreeprograms.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide instruction in both the BSW and MSW programs.
  2. Maintain an active research/scholarship agenda.
  3. Pursue external funding that supports scholarship.
  4. Engage in service to the School, university, community, and field of socialwork.
  5. Mentor students in their academic, research, and service interests.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsApplicants must have earnedan MSW from a CSWE accredited institution and a PhD ordoctorate in Social Work from an accredited college or university. ABD'snearing completion of their dissertation may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to be compassionate and empathetic while working with all populations.
  • Knowledge of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics.
  • Adaptability and persistence while working with University students.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver presentations and lectures.
  • Demonstrate potential for research, scholarly, and creative activities.
  • Maintain currency on relevant research, professional certifications, and continuing education.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity, respect, and discretion when dealing with confidential matters.

Preferred QualificationsLicensure at the LMSW or LCSW level.
Two years' post-master's experience.
Demonstrated teaching/training experience at undergraduate and graduate levels.
An established record of scholarship.
