What is a social media team?

A Social Media Team is a group of professionals responsible for managing an organization's presence on various social media platforms. Their tasks typically include creating and scheduling content, engaging with the online community, monitoring analytics, and developing strategies to grow and maintain the organization's brand online. This team often consists of roles such as social media managers, content creators, graphic designers, and analysts to ensure a cohesive and effective online presence.

How does a social media team typically coordinate campaigns and ensure consistent brand messaging across multiple platforms?

A Social Media Team usually collaborates closely through regular meetings, shared content calendars, and centralized project management tools to plan and execute campaigns. Team members often specialize in different platforms but work together to align messaging, visuals, and posting schedules to maintain brand consistency. Communication with marketing, design, and customer service departments is also common to ensure all content supports broader business goals. This structure helps address challenges like fast-paced trends and audience engagement while providing opportunities to learn from diverse perspectives within the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a member of a social media team, and why are they important?

To thrive as a member of a Social Media Team, you need strong content creation, digital marketing knowledge, and an understanding of social media platforms, often supported by a degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with analytics tools (such as Google Analytics, Hootsuite, or Sprout Social), content scheduling systems, and graphic design software is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and strong communication skills help team members engage audiences and respond to trends effectively. These competencies are vital for building brand presence, driving engagement, and achieving organizational goals in a fast-paced digital landscape.

Position Overview

In this staff-level role, you are responsible for monitoring feeds, creating engaging posts, and directly interacting with attendees across platforms like Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, BlueSky, and Telegram. You are a crucial link for real-time information -sharing schedule updates, highlighting cool moments on the floor, and answering public questions. If you are a naturally creative storyteller who can maintain a fun, on-brand tone while navigating fast-paced internet spaces, you will thrive in this role.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: 5-10 Hours Per Month
  • As convention approaches: Typically 3-5 hours per week, depending on support volume
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is required with flexible hours
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence is preferred to assist with setup and teardown capture the day before and the day after the event
Key Responsibilities

Your shift will combine real-time content creation, community engagement, and informational broadcasting:

  • Live Content Creation: Capture and post real-time updates, photos, and short-form videos directly from the convention floor, panels, and main stage events to generate excitement and engagement
  • Community Engagement: Actively monitor public tags, comments, and direct messages to interact with attendees, boost positive fan content, and foster a welcoming online community
  • Informational Broadcasting: Work closely with the Marketing and Programming teams to quickly draft and post critical updates, schedule changes, line reminders, or emergency announcements across all platforms

  • Trend & Meme Monitoring: Keep a finger on the pulse of current fandom trends, adapting to highlight the convention's unique culture
Qualifications

Required:

  • Punctuality & Shift Reliability: Strict adherence to your scheduled coverage times. Because the convention floor moves fast and social media never sleeps, being on time and ready to post is essential
  • Aptitude for Learning: A proven ability to quickly learn the convention's style guide, platform-specific posting workflows, and crisis communication protocols
  • Digital Communication Skills: Excellent short-form writing skills, including a strong grasp of grammar, internet culture, and how to convey information concisely and enthusiastically
  • Problem-Solving under Pressure: The ability to "think on your feet" when a schedule changes unexpectedly, drafting clear updates rapidly while maintaining a calm, reassuring public demeanor

Preferred:

  • Social Media Experience: Prior experience running a brand, club, event, or high-engagement personal account on modern social media platforms
  • Mobile Multimedia Creation: Comfort using a smartphone to take high-quality photos, record steady video clips, and quickly edit them using built-in platform tools or apps (like CapCut or Canva)
  • Fandom & Convention Knowledge: A deep understanding of convention culture, community inside jokes, and the specific dynamics that make fan-driven event feeds thrive

  • Free convention membership and staff perks
  • Staff hospitality (meals/snacks during your shifts at-con)
  • Exclusive staff events and social opportunities
