Job description

This position is located at Royal Gorge Cross Country (RGXC), Sugar Bowl's Nordic ski resort. RGXC is located 10 minutes west of Sugar Bowl in Soda Springs, CA. With over 100 miles of Cross-Country ski trails, RGXC is the premier Nordic ski destination in the Tahoe region.

Royal Gorge is looking for Grooming Operators to operate a grooming cat and prepare the ski area's snow for cross-country skiing. If you love working outdoors, running heavy equipment, and playing a direct role in the quality of every guest's day on the trails, this is the job for you. You'll work early mornings and late evenings across Royal Gorge's extensive track system, helping set the stage for some of the best Nordic skiing in the Sierra.

Situated atop beautiful Donner Summit, Sugar Bowl has a storied past with ties to Austrian ski culture, Hollywood and Walt Disney. This special community helped bring skiing to "sunny California" since December 1939. Since then, it continues to attract adventurous winter sports enthusiasts alike.

Who You Are:

1+ year of full-time grooming experience on modern grooming machinery with tillers; If you don't have Nordic grooming experience yet, a genuine willingness to learn

Possession of a valid Class C Driver License, with a driving record meeting the minimum standards required by Sugar Bowl Corp's insurance carrier

Comfortable working exposed to outside mountain weather conditions and in proximity to moving mechanical parts

What You'll do:

Provide excellent customer service to guests, employees, and business partners

Operate tracked equipment on ski trails

Inspect equipment before and after operating grooming machinery

Assist with grooming machinery maintenance, including checking fluid levels, machinery condition, and other areas to keep equipment safe and properly maintained

Document and report the condition of grooming machinery to management and Vehicle Maintenance

Maintain a working knowledge of Royal Gorge's extensive track system

Know efficient grooming patterns, including where and how to set classic skiing-specific tracks

Report hazards, downed trees, detours, and the need for tree or brush removal to management and Ski Patrol

Operate grooming machinery and perform job duties in extreme weather conditions during late evening and early morning hours

Assist with snow removal, including shoveling and clearing walkways, paths, and other areas as necessary

Physical Requirements:

Comfortable sitting for extended periods while operating a snowcat, with frequent climbing on and off the machine

Capable of working outdoors in extreme, cold winter weather conditions, often during late evening and early morning hours

Able to shovel and clear snow, including heavy, wet snow, as needed

Comfortable working in proximity to moving mechanical parts and heavy machinery

Manual dexterity for equipment inspection, basic maintenance checks, and machinery operation

Sufficient visual and auditory acuity to safely operate machinery and monitor changing weather and trail conditions
