What are Snapshot jobs?

Snapshot jobs typically refer to roles related to the management and execution of data snapshots within IT and cloud environments. These jobs involve creating, maintaining, and restoring point-in-time copies of data or system states, which are essential for backup, disaster recovery, and system testing. Snapshot professionals may work with various technologies, including storage systems, databases, and cloud platforms. The main goal is to ensure data integrity and availability while minimizing downtime and data loss.

What is the difference between Snapshot vs Data Analyst?

AspectSnapshotData Analyst
Required CredentialsTypically no formal certification, but familiarity with data tools helpsBachelor's degree in data science, statistics, or related field; certifications like CAP or Microsoft Data Analyst often preferred
Work EnvironmentData collection, quick analysis, often in field or on-siteOffice-based, working with datasets, reports, and visualization tools
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in industries like finance, retail, and logistics for quick data snapshotsCommon in tech, finance, healthcare for detailed data analysis and reporting

While a Snapshot focuses on quick, on-the-spot data collection and brief analysis, a Data Analyst performs in-depth data examination, reporting, and interpretation. Both roles involve working with data, but the scope and depth differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by Snapshot Analysts when interpreting data, and how can these be addressed?

Snapshot Analysts often encounter challenges such as incomplete or inconsistent data sets and the pressure to deliver timely insights. Addressing these issues typically involves collaborating closely with data engineers to clarify data sources and working with stakeholders to understand context. Maintaining clear documentation and developing strong analytical frameworks can also help ensure accurate interpretations. Open communication with team members is key to overcoming these challenges and producing actionable reports.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Snapshot (Data Analyst), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst (often referred to by the tool 'Snapshot'), you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a solid educational background in mathematics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with data visualization tools like Tableau, Excel, or proprietary platforms such as Verisk's Snapshot, as well as programming languages like SQL or Python, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help analysts interpret data and present actionable insights effectively. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, informed decision-making, and valuable contributions to business goals.

Job description

If solving complex distributed systems problems at massive scale excites you, EBS Snapshots is the place to do it. Our team builds and operates one of the largest distributed storage systems at AWS - infrastructure that is foundational to how AWS runs. EC2 instance launches, cross-region disaster recovery, and backup workflows across AWS all depend on what we build.
We're looking for a Software Development Engineer to help us design, build, and operate the systems behind EBS Snapshots - from control plane APIs and large-scale data movement to storage lifecycle management. You'll tackle challenges involving consistency at scale, cross-region data operations, and building services that millions of customers rely on every day.
We operate infrastructure in the critical path for AWS and regularly collaborate across organizational boundaries to deliver for customers. If you want your engineering decisions to have real impact at AWS scale, we'd love to talk.
Key job responsibilities
As an SDE on the EBS Snapshots team, you will:
- Design, implement, and operate distributed services that handle data operations at AWS scale across multiple regions
- Own features end-to-end - from design and implementation through testing, deployment, and launch
- Contribute to system architecture decisions, balancing trade-offs between performance, availability, durability, and cost
- Collaborate with engineers across multiple teams to deliver cross-service integrations and platform improvements
- Drive improvements including performance optimizations, infrastructure modernization, and technical debt reduction
- Write and review design documents, participate in code reviews, and raise the bar for engineering quality
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a team culture of continuous learning and improvement

A day in the life
No two days look the same. You might spend the morning designing a new API capability, the afternoon debugging a latency issue across a distributed system, and end the day reviewing a teammate's design document.
You'll work with engineers across your team and across AWS to solve problems that don't always have clear answers - from building customer-facing features to optimizing system performance to delivering cross-team integrations in unfamiliar codebases.
We value engineers who are curious, pragmatic, and comfortable with ambiguity. You'll have real ownership from day one.
About the team
EBS Snapshots is foundational to how AWS operates. Our team builds and operates the distributed systems that customers across AWS rely on for backup, disaster recovery, and data protection.
Engineers here get real ownership, work on problems at massive scale, and regularly collaborate across AWS to deliver for customers. We balance shipping impactful features with investing in long-term system health.
We're intentional about building a welcoming team culture, and we're looking for someone curious, empathetic, and motivated to help amplify that.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
