We're looking for an experienced Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to lead the EHS program at our Abingdon, UK facility. This role provides site-level ownership and leadership for health, safety, and environmental compliance and continuously improving EHS performance while remaining closely connected to day-to-day operations in a technically complex manufacturing and laboratory environment. This role serves as the senior site-level EHS subject matter expert and program owner, partnering closely with site leadership, regional EHS teams, and supporting the local EHS team.

Work Schedule: On-site | Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, with flexibility to support occasional nights/weekends and emergency response activities as required.

Reporting Line: This role reports to the EHS Manager.

What you'll do:

Senior EHS Technical Leadership & Strategy

  • Own and lead the site EHS management system

  • Act as the primary EHS point of contact and senior subject matter expert for the Abingdon site, providing authoritative technical guidance to site leadership and cross-functional partners.

  • Translate EHS strategy into site-level objectives, programs, and performance metrics.

  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership, mentoring, and prioritization guidance to the site EHS Specialist while remaining hands-on in site operations.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with UK environmental and occupational health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, COSHH, DSEAR, PUWER, Environmental Permitting Regulations, and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

  • Maintain ownership of legal registers, regulatory applicability assessments, and site compliance documentation.

  • Lead EHS audits, inspections, and regulatory interactions, including preparation, execution, and closure of findings.

  • Oversee risk assessment programs for manufacturing processes, laboratories, equipment, and new technology introductions, ensuring appropriate controls are defined and implemented.

  • Establish and monitor site EHS KPIs, trends, and performance reporting.

  • Partner with engineering and operations teams to support safe installation, operation, and maintenance of toxic and hazardous gas systems, including gas cabinets, detection systems, and associated emergency controls in compliance with COSHH and DSEAR.

Hazardous Materials & manufacturing Safety

  • Own site hazardous materials, hazardous waste, and toxic and hazardous gas safety programs, including governance, procedures, and engineering control strategies.

  • Ensure effective management of toxic and hazardous gas systems, including gas cabinets, detection and alarm systems, ventilation controls, and emergency response readiness, in compliance with COSHH and DSEAR.

  • Provide EHS leadership for manufacturing, laboratory, and cleanroom safety programs, including machine safety, laser safety, hazardous gases, and contractor safety.

  • Partner with engineering, facilities, and vendors to approve safe design, installation, commissioning, and modification of tools and equipment.

Training, Culture & Engagement

  • Define the site EHS training strategy and ensure delivery of regulatory-required and role-based training programs.

  • Champion a proactive safety culture through visible leadership, engagement with employees and contractors, and accountability at all levels.

  • Provide senior technical leadership to site safety committees and working groups, ensuring effective governance and follow-through on actions.

Incident Management & Emergency Response

  • Lead investigations of significant incidents, near-misses, and high-potential events, applying root cause analysis and ensuring robust corrective and preventive actions.

  • Serve as the site EHS lead during emergency events, coordinating response activities and post-incident recovery.

  • Ensure site emergency preparedness programs, emergency response teams, drills, and equipment readiness are established and maintained..

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of UK EHS regulatory requirements and practical application in manufacturing, laboratory, or high-hazard environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead site-level EHS programs and influence senior leaders.

  • Strong risk assessment, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities in complex technical environments.

  • Proven experience managing EHS professionals or acting as the site EHS lead.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage regulators, leadership, employees, and contractors.

  • Experience supporting the safe use and control of toxic and hazardous gases, including monitoring systems, emergency procedures, and compliance with DSEAR and COSHH requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in Environmental Health & Safety.

  • NEBOSH Diploma (Level 6) or equivalent professional qualification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading EHS programs in semiconductor manufacturing, cleanroom, laboratory, or advanced manufacturing environments.

  • Experience implementing and sustaining HSG65 principles, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.

  • Chartered status (CMIOSH) or working toward chartership.
