What is an SMTP job?

SMTP jobs refer to roles that involve working with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which is the standard protocol used for sending and receiving email across the Internet. Professionals in SMTP jobs may configure, manage, and troubleshoot email servers, ensure email deliverability, and handle issues related to spam filters or authentication. These roles are common in IT departments, web hosting companies, and organizations that manage large-scale email communications. Knowledge of email server software, networking, and security protocols is typically required for SMTP-related positions.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working with SMTP servers, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals managing SMTP servers often encounter challenges such as handling spam, ensuring email deliverability, and maintaining server security. Addressing these issues typically involves implementing robust authentication methods (like SPF, DKIM, and DMARC), continuously monitoring for unusual activity, and staying updated with the latest security patches. Collaborating with IT security teams and regularly reviewing server logs can help quickly identify and resolve issues, ensuring smooth email operations and compliance with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SMTP engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SMTP Engineer, you need a solid understanding of email protocols, mail server configuration, and network security, typically supported by experience in IT or computer science. Familiarity with mail transfer agents (like Postfix or Microsoft Exchange), email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), and monitoring tools is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help address deliverability issues and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills ensure reliable, secure email delivery and protect organizations from spam, phishing, and data breaches.

NVIDIA is hiring a Senior Staff Engineer - Enterprise Messaging and Exchange to guide the invention, reliability, security, and evolution of our global employee communications and collaboration platforms. The core of this role is deep ownership of Microsoft Exchange (on-premises, hybrid, and Exchange Online/O365), Azure-based services, and SMTP/IMAP integrations - while also extending into the broader enterprise SaaS ecosystem that keeps NVIDIA connected at scale, including platforms such as Slack, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Google Workspace. The ideal candidate brings strong Exchange expertise and is eager to grow their impact across a modern, AI-augmented enterprise collaboration stack. These services play a crucial role in how NVIDIA teams communicate, collaborate, and ship outstanding products. The position requires the ability to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with high standards and collaboration across teams.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Architect, implement, and operate highly available messaging solutions using Microsoft Exchange (on-premises/hybrid/Exchange Online), Azure services, SMTP relays, and IMAP; establish and enforce architecture standards and best practices across regions/environments.

  • Plan and execute server upgrades and monthly patching; ensure configurations and changes meet compliance and audit requirements.

  • Monitor health, performance, and capacity; analyze logs/traces and protocol flows to prevent incidents, minimize downtime, and optimize throughput and user experience. Provide expert-level diagnosis and resolution for complex mail flow issues; deep knowledge of SMTP/IMAP, connectors, transport rules, and messaging architecture.

  • Implement encryption, email authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC), and anti-virus/anti-spam protections (e.g., Microsoft Defender); maintain secure configurations and hardening baselines.

  • Lead/assist initiatives such as migrations, tenant consolidations, and M&A; define requirements and integration points with enterprise messaging and exchange apps and services.

  • Handle day-to-day operations and escalations; mentor engineers/architects and foster a culture of learning, documentation, SOPs, run-books, and enabling support team.

  • Partner on the management and operations of large-scale enterprise SaaS collaboration platforms (e.g., Slack, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Google Workspace), including onboarding, provisioning, policy governance, and lifecycle management.

  • Build strategy to keep enhancing the messaging and collaboration ecosystems with evolving technologies, including AI-driven automation of operations and administration.

What We Need To See:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 8+ years of proven experience architecting and managing Exchange Server (on-prem & SE), hybrid/Exchange Online (O365), Public Folders, SMTP, Active Directory, and Azure integrations.

  • Demonstrable ability to take end-to-end ownership of the experience for the users of the services.

  • Solid understanding of Exchange architecture, including DAGs (Database Availability Groups) and hybrid configurations.

  • Extremely motivated, highly passionate, and curious about new technologies. Takes pride in their work and strives to achieve incredible results; superb communication and planning skills.

  • Ability to work successfully with multi-functional teams, principals, and architects; coordinates optimally across organizational boundaries and geographies.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.

Ways to Stand Out From The Crowd:

  • Experience leading large-scale messaging platforms and driving resolution for critical severity issues.

  • Experience managing large-scale enterprise SaaS platforms - such as Slack, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, or Google Workspace - including onboarding, day-to-day operations, and lifecycle management.

  • Ability to automate operations and administration of enterprise services leveraging AI, agents, and modern automation frameworks. Passion to leverage Agentic AI to drive reliability, reduce toil, and improve the employee experience at scale.

  • Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for automation is crucial; Python scripting is a plus.
