What is SMT machine programming?

SMT machine programming involves creating and optimizing the software instructions that control Surface Mount Technology (SMT) machines, which are used to place electronic components onto printed circuit boards (PCBs) during manufacturing. This process includes generating pick-and-place programs, setting up component libraries, and configuring machine parameters to ensure accurate, high-speed assembly. SMT programmers work closely with engineers and production teams to reduce errors, increase efficiency, and adapt to design changes. Mastery of SMT programming is essential for efficient electronics manufacturing and maintaining high product quality.

What is the difference between Smt Machine Programming vs Smt Operator?

AspectSmt Machine ProgrammingSmt Operator
CredentialsTechnical certifications, training in SMT programmingBasic technical knowledge, on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, coding, and testing SMT programs in manufacturing settingsOperating SMT machines on the production line
Employer & IndustryElectronics manufacturing, PCB assemblyElectronics manufacturing, PCB assembly

Smt Machine Programming involves creating and optimizing programs for SMT machines, requiring technical skills and certifications. In contrast, Smt Operators focus on running and maintaining the machines during production. Both roles are essential in electronics manufacturing, but they differ in responsibilities and skill requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by SMT machine programmers, and how can they be addressed?

SMT Machine Programmers often encounter challenges such as optimizing machine setups for new PCB designs, minimizing downtime due to changeovers, and troubleshooting placement or soldering issues. These challenges can be addressed by staying up-to-date with the latest software updates, collaborating closely with process engineers and production teams, and continuously analyzing production data to identify areas for improvement. Effective communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving are essential for ensuring smooth production and high-quality output.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SMT machine programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SMT Machine Programmer, you need a solid understanding of electronics manufacturing processes, PCB assembly, and experience with surface mount technology, often backed by technical diplomas or certifications. Familiarity with SMT programming software (such as Fuji, Yamaha, or Panasonic systems), CAD tools, and knowledge of IPC standards is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for optimizing production and resolving issues. Mastering these skills ensures efficient, high-quality circuit board assembly and minimizes costly production errors.

Job description

K2 is building the largest and highest-power satellites ever flown, unlocking performance levels previously out of reach across every orbit. Backed by $450M from leading investors including Altimeter Capital, Redpoint Ventures, T. Rowe Price, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Alpine Space Ventures, and others – with an additional $500M in signed contracts across commercial and US government customers – we're mass-producing the highest-power satellite platforms ever built for missions from LEO to deep space.

The rise of heavy-lift launch vehicles is shifting the industry from an era of mass constraint to one of mass abundance, and we believe this new era demands a fundamentally different class of spacecraft. Engineered to survive the harshest radiation environments and to fully capitalize on today's and tomorrow's massive rockets, K2 satellites deliver unmatched capability at constellation scale and across multiple orbits.

With multiple launches planned through 2026 and 2027, we're Building Bigger to develop the solar system and become a Kardashev Type II (K2) civilization. If you are a motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and you're excited about contributing to the success of a groundbreaking Series C space startup, we'd love for you to apply.

The Role

You will contribute to the build and development of avionics and software test assets for major satellite subsystems and vehicle simulation. This role will be the owner of avionics hardware installation, wire harnessing, test rack fabrication, and HITL (Hardware-In-The-Loop) test bed build and maintenance. As an essential part of the Research & Development technician team, you will demonstrate diverse proficiencies across avionics products, production and industry build fundamentals, and a high level of attention to detail to ensure quality and reliability of electrical components and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support full build and maintenance of HITL (Hardware-In-The-Loop) test assets, including installation of avionics hardware, manufacturing and routing of wire harnesses, and fabrication of load simulators
  • Assemble production test racks for HITL, acceptance testing, and qualification of flight hardware
  • Follow engineering procedures to perform electrical checkouts such as continuity, discontinuity, and multimeter measurements on components and vehicle systems
  • Assist design engineering throughout the hardware development and pre-production
stages by supporting specification development, component assembly and process validation testing
  • Work autonomously and coordinate cross-functionally with various engineering and technician team to meet high pace schedule and quality requirements
  • Successfully use an array of hand, power, and pneumatic mechanical tools to build fixtures, interfacing panels, and tooling assemblies

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience assembling, integrating, and testing electronic hardware in the aerospace industry
  • 1+ years of SMT/through-hole soldering, using electronics equipment, and assembling test racks
  • Demonstrated skill and proficiency in soldering and crimping as well as assembling cable harnesses and connectors

Nice to Have

  • IPC Certified for PCB and cable harness rework (IPC-A-610, IPC-A-620)
  • Hand soldering ability that meets IPC J-STD-001
  • Experience designing, building, and testing electrical assemblies and test fixtures
  • Experience performing crimping, wire stripping, continuity testing, connector pin outs, and routing and tie wrapping
  • Ability to drill and tap holes, and use common shop equipment such as drill press, grinders, and band saws
  • Ability to create, read, review, and redline electrical and test rack schematics
  • Strong communication skills with ability to communicate hardware and systems problems
