Job description

Adventure is our Culture. Join a team that celebrates a lifestyle as bold as the terrain we love. At Backcountry, we are rooted in adventure, recognition, and wellbeing on and off the mountain. We spotlight employee stories, celebrate milestones, and offer exclusive outdoor perks. Whether you are at HQ, in a retail store, or remote, you will be part of a team that thrives on energy, exploration, and connection.

Reports to: Managing Editor

Location: Cottonwood Heights, Utah (Hybrid - 3x/week in-office)

About the Role:

Backcountry is looking for a Marketing Copywriter to create compelling copy that inspires customers to get outside and drives business results across Backcountry, Competitive Cyclist, Steep & Cheap, and our other brands. As Marketing Copywriter, you will write messaging across major marketing channels, ensuring each brand's unique voice stays consistent while adapting your writing to different audiences, campaigns, and customer journeys.

Beyond writing, you will be part of a team thoughtfully adopting AI in editorial workflows—using prompt libraries and approved tools, contributing ideas for improving processes, and helping the team work faster without sacrificing creativity, accuracy, or brand voice. Success means consistently delivering polished, on-brand copy on deadline.

This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.

What You'll Do:
  • Write compelling, high-performing marketing copy across email, SMS, paid social, display, landing pages, site merchandising, and other customer touchpoints for Backcountry and Competitive Cyclist.
  • Adapt messaging to each brand's distinct voice and audience—from Backcountry's outdoor enthusiasts to Competitive Cyclist's performance-driven riders—while tailoring copy for each marketing channel.
  • Uphold brand voice, tone, and editorial standards across campaign marketing, following established style guidelines and flagging inconsistencies or gaps to the Managing Editor.
  • Optimize copy using customer insights, SEO best practices, A/B test results, and conversion data to continually improve campaign performance and engagement.
  • Use AI tools as part of your daily writing workflow, following the team's prompt libraries, best practices, and quality standards to work faster without sacrificing creativity or brand integrity.
  • Contribute ideas as the team tests new AI tools and workflows, sharing what works to produce better work, faster.
  • Participate in peer copy reviews, giving and receiving thoughtful feedback that strengthens quality, consistency, and the team's overall craft.
  • Partner closely with Merchandising, Creative, Marketing, eCommerce, and SEO teams to deliver cohesive campaigns, communicate timelines clearly, and proactively identify risks before launch.
  • Balance speed with editorial excellence, delivering polished, accurate copy under tight deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
Required Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of professional copywriting or editorial experience, preferably in ecommerce, retail, or consumer marketing.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a demonstrated ability to adapt tone across brands and channels.
  • Experience writing high-performing marketing copy across email, digital marketing, web, and paid media.
  • Experience using generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar) in writing workflows, paired with strong editorial judgment and quality control.
  • Willingness to learn and follow established AI prompts, workflows, and documentation used in content production.
  • Working knowledge of SEO, conversion copywriting, and performance-driven marketing best practices.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines consistently.
  • Collaborative mindset with experience partnering across creative, marketing, merchandising, and ecommerce teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bike riding and cycling-specific writing experience.
Why Join:

The people who do best here are builders. They take ownership, move fast, and want to see the direct impact of their work.

  • Cross-Functional Impact: Shape how Backcountry and Competitive Cyclist show up across campaigns, channels, and customer touchpoints, working closely with merchandising, creative, marketing, and ecommerce teams.
  • Skill Building: Get hands-on experience as AI transforms editorial workflows, testing new tools and ideas alongside the team while growing your craft with support from senior teammates.
  • Own Your Work: Write close to the business with access to performance insights that show what resonates, converts, and deserves another iteration.
  • Competitive Benefits: Paid time off policies, 401(k) match, medical/dental/vision and a variety of supplemental policies, and employee discounts across our portfolio of brands.
Interview Process:
  1. Recruiter Screen - A 30-minute conversation with our recruiting team to align on the role, your background, and what you are looking for.
  2. Hiring Manager Interview - Conversation with the Managing Editor focused on your writing approach, brand voice adaptability, and experience with AI-assisted workflows.
  3. In-Person Interview - We'd like to meet you at our Cottonwood Heights office. Details and logistics will be arranged with your recruiter.
  4. Reference Checks - Conducted in parallel with the final stages where possible.
  5. Offer - We move quickly for the right candidate.

Interview process is subject to change. Any updates will be communicated promptly and clearly.

Please Note:
  • Part of our interview process is a mandatory in-person interview with someone on our team prior to an offer.  Candidates that are unwilling or unable to meet for an in-person interview will be removed from consideration immediately.
