What is a SmartPlant 3D Structural designer?

A SmartPlant 3D Structural designer is a professional who uses SmartPlant 3D (SP3D) software to model, design, and manage structural components in complex industrial projects, such as plants and facilities. Their role involves creating detailed 3D models of steel structures, platforms, supports, and other civil/structural elements within the SP3D environment. They collaborate with engineers and other designers to ensure the structural models are accurate, meet project specifications, and integrate smoothly with other disciplines. This helps improve project efficiency, reduce errors, and streamline construction processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SmartPlant 3D Structural Designer, and why are they important?

To excel as a SmartPlant 3D Structural Designer, you generally need a background in structural engineering or drafting, with experience in 3D modeling and familiarity with design codes. Proficiency in SmartPlant 3D software, as well as supporting tools like AutoCAD and Navisworks, is typically required, and certifications in these platforms are advantageous. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate efficiently with multidisciplinary teams. Mastery of these skills ensures accurate, efficient, and compliant structural designs within complex engineering projects.

What is the difference between Smartplant 3D Structural vs Piping Designer?

AspectSmartplant 3D StructuralPiping Designer
Primary FocusModeling and detailing structural components in 3DDesigning piping systems and layouts in 3D
Required SkillsStructural modeling, AutoCAD, STAAD, or similarPiping design, AutoCAD, PDMS, or similar
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, construction, oil & gas, power plantsRefineries, chemical plants, offshore platforms

Smartplant 3D Structural and Piping Designer roles both involve 3D modeling within the plant design industry. While Smartplant 3D Structural focuses on structural components, Piping Designers specialize in piping systems. Both roles require similar software skills and industry experience, but their core responsibilities differ based on the project focus.

What are some common challenges faced by SmartPlant 3D Structural designers, and how can they be addressed?

SmartPlant 3D Structural designers often encounter challenges such as managing complex models with numerous interconnected components, coordinating with other engineering disciplines, and ensuring data consistency across project revisions. Effective communication within multidisciplinary teams and maintaining strict version control are essential to minimize errors. Familiarity with SmartPlant 3D’s tools for clash detection and change management can also help designers streamline their workflow and reduce rework.

At Mitsubishi Power Americas, we're not just building better clean energy technologies; we're architecting a better future. Our team is redefining power generation to accelerate the global energy transition. We operate as one team, driven by collaboration, innovation, and accountability. Our culture is grounded in our shared values: Safety, Family, Innovative, Inclusive, Accountable, and Courageous. Together, we are shaping a sustainable future and making net zero a reality.

Role Overview

The Structural Designer - Level II is responsible for independently developing and coordinating structural drawings and 3D models for large industrial gas turbine power projects. This role works closely with Structural Engineers and crossfunctional design teams to translate engineering intent into accurate, constructible designs using Tekla Structures and SmartPLANT 3D.

The position supports project execution, quality, and schedule objectives by delivering clear, coordinated models and drawings that meet project requirements and applicable codes and standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain detailed 3D structural models using Tekla Structures and SmartPLANT 3D with minimal supervision
  • Perform structural modeling for steel frames, equipment support structures, access platforms, ladders, stairs, and module support frames and foundations as applicable
  • Generate structural drawings including general arrangements, steel framing layouts, connection and detailing drawings, and material takeoffs
  • Coordinate with piping, equipment, electrical, and civil teams to resolve clashes and ensure constructability, access, and proper clearances
  • Support modulebased design considerations including transport, lifting, and erection
  • Participate in 30%, 60%, and 90% model reviews and support clash detection and resolution
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable codes and standards (AISC, AWS, IBC)
  • Maintain accurate model data and incorporate engineering changes in a timely manner
  • Support fabrication and construction needs by providing clear, accurate, and constructible models and drawings
  • Deliver design outputs in accordance with project schedules and milestones

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support continuous improvement of structural modeling workflows, Tekla templates, and SmartPLANT 3D integration
  • Assist in the development and enforcement of structural modeling standards and best practices
  • Collaborate with global and regional engineering teams, including external partners and vendors
  • Protect confidential and proprietary company information
  • Manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fastpaced project environment

Requirements
  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Drafting, Structural Design, or a related technical field preferred
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience as a Structural Designer or Drafter supporting industrial or power plant projects
  • Demonstrated experience supporting gas turbine, power plant, or heavy industrial projects
  • Strong proficiency in Tekla Structures for structural steel modeling and detailing
