Burns Dirt - Columbus, MS

Burns Dirt is a licensed general contractor focusing on heavy civil site development across the Southeast. Established in 1977, our core values and dedication to our people guide every aspect of our work. We invite you to contact us and see what it means to be #burnsbuilt.

Position Summary

The Project Estimator plays a critical role in the pre-construction process by analyzing plans, specifications, and site conditions to develop accurate and competitive cost estimates for civil construction projects across North Mississippi. This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to interpret technical documents, and a solid understanding of heavy civil construction practices.

Our scope of work includes mass earthwork and grading, utilities, and concrete. A civil engineering background is highly preferred; prior civil project management experience is equally valued, given the hands-on knowledge it brings of equipment, production rates, installation methods, and job sequencing.

The Estimator will collaborate closely with project managers, crew leaders, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure that all cost elements are accounted for and well-documented. This is a key position that directly contributes to the success and profitability of the company's projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret project plans, specifications, and site conditions for estimate development
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and cost analysis across mass earthwork and grading, utilities, and concrete scopes of work
  • Identify scopes of work, assign crews, and forecast required materials, equipment, and subcontractors
  • Solicit pricing from vendors and subcontractors, ensuring competitive and complete bids
  • Utilize estimating software to develop accurate proposals and budgets
  • Visualize and interpret 2D drawings and translate into real-world execution
  • Assist in schedule development and phasing plans
  • Conduct site visits on projects currently bidding to assess site conditions and inform estimate development
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, owner/GC meetings, and project handoff meetings, including periodic travel to the Columbus/Starkville office
  • Coordinate with crew leaders and foremen to gather field input and production rates
  • Track and evaluate historical cost data for future project reference
  • Support project teams in change order development and cost updates during construction
  • Review and prepare cost reports, bid tabulations, and bid documents for internal and external use

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Agriculture Engineering, Accounting, or related field
  • A civil engineering background is highly preferred; prior civil project management experience is equally valued, as it brings direct knowledge of equipment, production, installation methods, and job sequencing/requirements
  • Hands-on experience or strong familiarity with estimating mass earthwork and grading, utilities, and/or concrete construction
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in industry software including HCSS HeavyBid, Trimble Business Center, and AgTek
  • Takeoff software experience - AgTek, CAD, and Trimble - is highly beneficial
  • Familiarity with Mississippi DOT and Alabama DOT standard specifications is a plus
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contracts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage time and multiple deadlines independently
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and contribute to a positive work culture
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality

Benefits

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Advancement opportunities within the company
  • Company paid Health insurance
  • Supplemental Dental and Vision Insurance available
  • 401k with Company Match
  • Profit-sharing bonus program
  • Flexible Schedule
  • Skills & Technology Training
