Job Summary:
The Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital within the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Small Animal Veterinary Technician Supervisor. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
At the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine w e are known for the clinical proficiency of our graduates as they are closely mentored and enjoy a high faculty to student ratio. They benefit from our pioneering collaboration with the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) in Portland, an excellent and very busy animal shelter where our students spend 2 weeks getting extensive hands-on experience in performing not only spays and neuters, but in working up and treating a wide variety of common medical and surgical conditions in small animals. They can also rotate through the Community Hospital at OHS, gaining even more general practice veterinary skills. The Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital within the college exemplifies the highest standards in patient-focused care and develops industry-leading professionals through the research and practice of evidence-based medicine that supports our local, regional and global community.
The OSU Small Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital (https://vetmed.oregonstate.edu/hospital) is seeking an experienced Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) for a Patient Services Coordinator (PSC) position. This technician will collaborate with other PSCs and the Patient Care Manager to oversee the daily operations of a busy Small Animal Hospital while ensuring exceptional patient care, operational efficiency, and staff development. This role provides direct supervision of CVTs, veterinary assistants, and student employees, fostering a collaborative, high-performing team dedicated to teaching, patient care, and client service. The ideal candidate combines strong leadership and organizational skills with advanced veterinary technical expertise. Responsibilities include managing staffing, training, performance, compliance, equipment and supply coordination, and collaboration with faculty and hospital leadership to support hospital operations. This individual will also provide hands-on patient care, assist with advanced surgical and diagnostic procedures, provide student instruction, and maintain high standards of safety, quality, and clinical excellence in a fast-paced academic veterinary environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead and supervise veterinary support staff by recruiting, training, scheduling, evaluating performance, fostering professional development, and ensuring appropriate staffing coverage.

Oversee service operations and regulatory compliance by maintaining hospital policies, safety standards, quality protocols, and collaborating with hospital leadership on operational initiatives.

Manage clinical equipment and resources by identifying equipment needs, coordinating procurement and repairs, evaluating products, identifying and working with vendors, and maintaining service-specific supplies.
-
Coordinate patient care and client services by managing admissions, discharges, scheduling, case assignments, medical records, financial estimates, client education, and communication with referring veterinarians.
-
Provide advanced veterinary nursing care and student instruction by carrying out clinician-directed treatments, diagnostics, medication administration, patient monitoring, emergency interventions, and documentation in the electronic medical record.

Support surgical and medical procedural services by preparing patients and operating rooms, assisting during procedures, maintaining sterile technique, monitoring patients, and coordinating post-operative care and room turnover.

Maintain clinical equipment and collaborate across hospital services by inspecting and servicing medical equipment, coordinating with Central Sterile and Pharmacy, and providing support to other hospital departments as needed.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Current certification as a Veterinary Technician and ability to obtain and maintain Oregon Certification within six months of hire date.
3 years experience as a CVT.
Effective written/verbal communication skills with the ability to build trusting relationships within a team with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
Demonstrated ability to effectively instruct others in veterinary techniques.
Ability to work independently and practice good judgement to ensure high quality care.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem-solving and team advancement.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
VTS in a Small Animal specialty
Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role
EzyVet/Vet Radar experience
Working Conditions/Schedule:
This position is located in an extremely busy Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Individuals have possible exposure to noxious odors, infectious diseases, chemicals, gas anesthetics, radiation, loud noises, wet and slippery floors, and machinery. This position has access to controlled substances. This position may be required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds and may be required to push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 200 pounds. Working with and around small and large animals has certain inherent risks; animal handling and restraint can lead to injury. To minimize risk to employee, Oregon State University offers a rabies vaccination at the employe’s expense (acceptance/declination at the discretion of the appointee)
The work schedule will be normally 8am to 5pm, though the work schedule may shift as needed to provide technician coverage on weekends, evenings, and holidays; overtime may be required. This position is considered essential and may be required to work during inclement weather.
