Job description

Position Summary
Performs Histological technical procedures using manual and automated techniques to achieve high quality Pathology slides for review by Pathologists.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following: - If Histotechnologist

  1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  2. Performs embedding and sectioning of tissue blocks following section protocol as to biopsies, routine, etc.
  3. Evaluates routine stain daily (H&E), reviews for inconsistencies and confirms and/or corrects before releasing slides.
  4. Performs Special Stains and evaluates for inconsistencies and confirms and/or correct before releasing slides, Checks positive controls and documents on run log(s).
  5. Performs Immunohistochemistries, and evaluates for inconsistencies and confirms and/or correct before releasing slides, Checks positive and negative controls and documents on run log(s).
  6. Performs routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting procedures on all instrumentation.
  7. Lines up and verifies embedded paraffin blocks against block log for technologists to cut.
  8. Performs QC of paraffin blocks vs. routine stained slides with documentation on block log.
  9. Performs frozen sections as needed.
  10. Downloads and Prints cassettes for surgical specimens as needed.
  11. Assist in submitting surgical tissue specimens - making sure that patient data is verified against the specimen label, specimen container, and LIS information. Enters block information in to Meditech to include number of cassettes and pieces of tissue per cassette
  12. Record daily Quality Control of all instruments used in job description, with proper documentation such as temperature, cleaning records, and troubleshooting with proper documentation in the Troubleshooting Log Book.
  13. Maintain inventory of supplies/reagents within your job description and order supplies/reagents accordingly.
  14. Participates in external (CAP) and internal proficiency testing.
  15. Participates in the evaluation of new products and procedures as required/request
  16. Participates in the Quality Control Program for reagents and tests.
  17. Knowledgeable in LIS applications for Histology/Cytology to perform job duties
  18. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements
- If Histotechnologist
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or NYS PA License required.
  • Degree in Medical Technology or related science preferred with one year of relevant hospital experience in Histology.
  • ASCP preferred

  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technician License or NYS PA License required
  • Degree in Medical Technology or related science preferred with one year of relevant hospital experience in Histology.
