Sleep Medical professionals often have a broader medical background and may hold additional certifications or licenses, focusing on diagnosis and treatment. Sleep Technologists primarily conduct sleep studies and monitor patients during sleep. Both roles work in similar environments but differ in scope and responsibilities.

How long does it take to be a sleep medical technologist?

Becoming a sleep medical technologist typically requires completing a post-secondary education program in respiratory therapy, sleep technology, or a related field, which can take about 1 to 2 years. Additionally, obtaining certification such as the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential may be required or preferred, and gaining hands-on experience through clinical training is essential.

How to become a sleep medical specialist?

To become a sleep medical specialist, typically one must complete medical school, obtain a residency in neurology, pulmonology, or psychiatry, and then pursue a fellowship in sleep medicine. Certification from a recognized board, such as the American Board of Sleep Medicine, is often required, along with developing skills in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders using tools like polysomnography. Licensing and ongoing education are also necessary to practice professionally.
