What is a sleep coach?

A Sleep Coach is a professional who helps individuals improve their sleep quality by providing personalized strategies and guidance. They assess sleep patterns, identify issues, and create tailored plans to enhance rest and overall well-being. Sleep Coaches may work with children, adults, or specific groups like athletes or professionals. Their approach often includes lifestyle adjustments, relaxation techniques, and habit formation to promote healthier sleep routines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sleep coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sleep Coach, you need a strong understanding of sleep science, behavioral coaching, and assessment techniques, often supported by certifications in sleep coaching or related health fields. Familiarity with sleep tracking technologies, digital wellness apps, and record-keeping software is valuable for monitoring client progress. Empathy, patience, active listening, and motivational interviewing are stand-out soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for effectively guiding clients through sleep-related challenges and sustaining long-term behavioral change.

What are some common challenges faced by sleep coaches, and how do they address them?

Sleep Coaches often encounter clients who have deeply ingrained habits or anxiety around sleep, requiring creative and adaptable strategies to foster change. They may also need to navigate sensitive discussions about lifestyle adjustments and manage the expectations of clients who seek quick results. Success in this role involves building strong rapport, setting realistic goals, and consistently following up to monitor progress and celebrate improvements. Working closely with clients, and sometimes collaborating with healthcare professionals, Sleep Coaches provide personalized support to address these challenges and help clients achieve sustainable sleep habits.

How do I become a sleep coach?

To become a sleep coach, individuals typically complete specialized training or certification programs in sleep science, behavioral coaching, or sleep consulting. Developing strong communication skills and understanding sleep hygiene, patterns, and disorders are essential, and some may pursue certifications from recognized organizations to enhance credibility.

Job description

Nurse Practitioner (Sleep Medicine)

Remote

At Sleep Doctor PC, we're helping millions get a full night's rest. As the most trusted name in sleep health, we make better sleep possible with proven support, clear answers, and hands-on care that fits real life. Across our brands—SleepDoctor.com, SleepFoundation.org, and SleepApnea.org—we combine clinical expertise with consumer-first experiences to help people understand their sleep, tackle real challenges, and wake up to healthier, more energized lives. If you're passionate about making better sleep possible—and want to help reshape the future of sleep care—we'd love to meet you.

The Role

Sleep Doctor PC is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our clinical team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of patient care, specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of sleep disorders. From obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to insomnia, you will help our patients reclaim their health by improving the quality of their rest. The ideal candidate is a proactive clinician who balances evidence-based medicine with a compassionate, patient-centered approach.

What You Get To Do Every Day
  • Clinical Assessment: Conduct comprehensive sleep histories and physical examinations (via telehealth or in-person) to evaluate sleep-related complaints.
  • Diagnosis & Testing: Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including Home Sleep Apnea Tests (HSAT) and in-lab Polysomnography (PSG).
  • Treatment Planning: Develop and implement personalized treatment plans, including CPAP/BiPAP therapy, pharmacological interventions, and lifestyle counseling.
  • Patient Education: Guide patients on sleep hygiene, the mechanics of sleep disorders, and the long-term health benefits of compliance with therapy.
  • Follow-up Care: Monitor patient progress, manage equipment titration/adjustments, and provide Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) referrals or basic coaching.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with our Sleep Technicians, Medical Director, and administrative staff to ensure a seamless patient experience.
What You Bring To The Role
  • Master's or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nursing program.
  • Current, active unrestricted multi-state NP license preferred
  • Board certification (ANCC or AANP). Certification in Behavioral Sleep Medicine (CBSM) or experience in Sleep Medicine is a major plus.
  • DEA registration and state-specific prescriptive authority
  • Minimum 1-2 years of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner preferred
  • Experience with telehealth or remote patient care preferred
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and telehealth platforms. Familiarity with CPAP compliance software (e.g., Canvas, AirView, Care Orchestrator) is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional verbal and written skills, with the ability to explain complex physiological concepts in "human" terms

We play an important role in the health & wellness decisions of our audiences, and it's a responsibility we don't take lightly. We invest thoughtfully to provide the most expert-driven, audience-first experience

We embody rapid, sustainable growth. Run into a challenge or a new opportunity? Everyone on the team rolls up their sleeves and digs in.

We're going to push you to ask big questions and find bold answers. Everyone has a seat at the table, regardless of their title or job description

In Seattle, our positions adopt a hybrid model, recognizing the importance of in-person collaboration and remote work. Our newly renovated-office remains open five days a week to those who thrive in a traditional office-environment

We love a good celebration! We enjoy what we do because of who we do it with, and take time to celebrate every win – whether ours or a teammate's

$60-65/hr. Note that final compensation is subject to the candidate's specific qualifications and location, as well as the needs of the company.

The Company currently provides medical, vision, and dental insurance with 100% of the employee medical, vision, and dental premiums covered by the Company. There is an option to participate in both a medical FSA and dependent care FSA. We offer a 401(k) plan, with fully matching contributions up to 3% of salary and 50% matching from 3% to 5% of salary. You will be eligible for Paid Time Off in accordance with the company's policies. Our Seattle-based employees will receive commuter benefits.

Sleep Doctor is committed to bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive and be their authentic self, feel a sense of community, and do great work together. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer open to all qualified applicants
