What is a skybox in the context of video games and 3D graphics?

A skybox is a method used in video games and 3D graphics to create the illusion of distant three-dimensional surroundings, such as skies, mountains, or outer space, by mapping images onto the inner surfaces of a cube or sphere that surrounds the entire scene. This technique allows developers to simulate expansive backgrounds without requiring a large amount of processing power. The skybox remains stationary relative to the camera, so it always appears in the background, giving depth and realism to the environment.
