Job description

Description

The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead electrical design project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments throughout the oil, gas, refining, midstream, chemical, renewable fuels, and heavy industrial market sectors. The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting electrical plans according to budget constraints, design factors, client needs, applicable codes and standards, and project execution requirements.

  • Lead electrical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.

  • Prepare electrical equipment specifications, data sheets, requests for quotation, technical bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations for medium-voltage and low-voltage electrical equipment, including switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, and packaged equipment.

  • Review electrical equipment vendor drawings and coordinate technical interfaces with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers, and designers.

  • Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget, staffing plans, and construction planning. Lead electrical discipline execution, support project managers with work planning and progress reporting, and manage change effectively.

  • Apply expert knowledge of commonly used electrical concepts, practices, codes, and procedures, including NEC, IEEE, API, ANSI, NEMA, NFPA, and applicable client and site standards.

  • Apply knowledge and experience to complex projects and develop practical, non-standard design solutions where required.

  • Perform or review power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination, motor starting, grounding, and arc flash studies using SKM, ETAP, or similar power system modeling software.

  • Perform quality reviews of production drawings, specifications, calculations, and project-related data to verify technical accuracy, interdisciplinary coordination, and incorporation of comments.

  • Provide quality review of construction administration activities, including coordination with field personnel to resolve design-related installation issues, calculations, field inspections, and testing of electrical systems.

  • Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.

  • Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates. Report project performance.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the electrical engineering practice. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.

  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.

  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 7 years of electrical engineering experience.

  • Or, a Bachelor's degree in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 7 years of electrical engineering experience.

  • Or, a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and 6 years of electrical engineering experience.

  • EPC project experience preferred.

  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of electrical equipment design and applicable codes and standards, including NEC, IEEE, API, ANSI, NEMA, NFPA, and client/site standards. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Medium-voltage power distribution experience preferred, including specification or design of switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, protective schemes, and related electrical equipment.

  • Experience performing or reviewing power system studies using SKM, ETAP, or similar software, including short-circuit, load flow, motor starting, protective device coordination, grounding, and arc flash studies.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience leading discipline design and project execution for large or complex projects, including delegating work tasks, coordinating with other disciplines, managing deliverables, mentoring team members, and resolving issues in a collaborative environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required, or ability to obtain a PE license within 6 months of hire.
