Job description

Job Summary:

Under the immediate supervision of the Ice Rink Manager and Assistant Manager, and at times the Facility Manager or Assistant Director of Recreation and Facilities, the Skate Guard is responsible for supporting daily ice rink operations at the Weinberg Family Recreation Center while providing excellent customer service to patrons.


Key Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all ice-skating patrons during public skating sessions.
  • Monitor the ice surface to maintain order and enforce rink rules.
  • Assist with general rink operations as assigned by supervisory staff.


This is a part-time position from November to March typically requires working up to 10-25 hours a week, with night and weekend shifts required.


Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years old or older.
  • Have at one year of skating experience.
  • Must possess CPR/AED/First Aid Certification or willing to obtain within one month of hire.
  • All employees must pass a Criminal Background check, which the Glencoe Park District will cover.


Required Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the philosophy of public recreation, with the ability to communicate it effectively to others.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge relevant to the position.


Required Skills:

  • Must be dependable and flexible, demonstrating strong safety awareness and sound judgment.
  • Ability to understand and follow rules, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and organize materials effectively.
  • Must be able to skate proficiently.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Enforce rules and regulations appropriate to the ice rink.
  • Follow directions and instructions; be dependable, punctual, and organized.
  • Handle all contacts with the public (patrons) pleasantly, courteously, and professionally.
  • Skate Guards must remain on duty in their assigned area for the entire assignment period, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Remain in view of the ice at all times, monitor participants, and never leave the ice unattended.
  • Ensure rental skates are in good Skate guards must wipe down skate blades after each use, tuck in laces, and place them in correctly labeled locations.
  • Assist all skaters who fall and ensure they are not hurt; if any injury occurs, notify the supervisor immediately.
  • They must always follow the instructions given to them by the Facility Manager, Ice Rink Manager, or Assistant Ice Rink Manager.
  • Follow all general rules and regulations applicable to the public.
  • Attend in-service staff meetings.
  • Follow, administer, and implement Glencoe Park District policies and guidelines.
  • Cooperate and assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of the ice rink, such as the lobby, recreation room, locker rooms, office area, and all bathrooms. This may include the removal of litter or garbage and checking and emptying trashcans before, during, and after rental parties.
  • Must familiarize themselves with the "Ice Rink Rules and Regulations."
  • Must wear uniform at all times while on duty.
  • Enforce rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the ice rink.
  • Completing a daily checklist and immediately reporting any accidents or concerns.
  • Show good safety awareness and follow proper safety policies and procedures implemented according to the Glencoe Park District Safety Manual, and report any accidents, incidents, or violations to the Facility Manager.
  • Assisted in setting up and organizing the daily ice rink and facility activities.
  • Field and answer patron questions to the best of their ability.
  • Participate in special events.

Hours:

Due to the nature of Park District programming, evening, weekend, and some holiday hours are to be expected


Pay Scale:

This is a seasonal part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position. The intended starting pay for this position is $15 per hour, with a full pay scale ranging from $15 per hour to $20 per hour.


Final compensation will be determined in good faith based on an evaluation of the candidate's qualifications, experience, and the recommendation of the Facility Manager - Beach and Ice Rink, or the Assistant Director of Recreation and Facilities.
