Chief Engineer - Critical Operations Lead

Serve as a technical engineering leader at JLL!

The Chief Engineer oversees the efficient, safe and responsible operation of all building systems and equipment across multiple shifts in support of 24/7 critical building operations. You will lead a specialized engineering team of 16 and reporting to the Engineering manager for multiple sites serving as the primary technical expert and point of contact for complex infrastructure issues, emergency response, and planned maintenance execution. This role ensures continuous uptime of critical systems, coordinates off-hour work order responses, and optimizes team performance to prevent operational downtime. This position requires the Chief Engineer to be on-site.

Schedule: 7am-3pm (flexible and needs to check in with off shift coverages) Monday through Friday, on-call rotation.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Oversee the maintenance and continuous operation of all critical building systems with zero downtime tolerance, serving as the primary escalation point for technical issues

Supervise and manage a technical engineering team across multiple shifts including hiring, training, coaching and personal development focused on efficiency and effectiveness

Create, implement and routinely update documented planned maintenance procedures, prioritizing critical technical work and high-complexity preventive maintenance tasks

Coordinate and lead off-hour and emergency work order responses, ensuring resolution of issues affecting building operations

Participate regularly in client-facing and property team communications, serving as the technical subject matter expert

Assist in the development of a capital improvement plan focused on system reliability and performance optimization

Select, schedule, supervise and direct contractors for technical and specialized work; monitor and document performance as necessary

Respond effectively to emergencies and service calls as the primary technical contact, ensuring minimal disruption to operations

Lead and organize ongoing technical, safety, and operational process training programs and procedures with focus on critical systems expertise

Collaborate with the second Chief Engineer and maintenance coordinator to balance workload.

Other duties as requested by property management team and/or client

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

7+ years of related experience, especially as a Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer or similar in critical operations environments

People management experience (leading a team) with demonstrated ability to drive efficiency and accountability

Strong technical expertise in complex building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety and building automation

Trade school education, union training, military service or college is desirable

Universal CFC EPA certification

Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams)

Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and serve as primary point of contact during critical failures

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Comfort using ladders up to 30 feet tall

Ability to frequently climb, bend, kneeling, lift and/or drive

Strong customer service and communication skills with ability to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders

Experience managing on-call rotations and coordinating emergency response

Estimated compensation for this position:
