What is a Single Cell Core?
What is the difference between Single Cell Core vs Single Cell Technician?
| Aspect | Single Cell Core | Single Cell Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a bachelor's degree in biology, biotechnology, or related fields | Usually requires a similar degree or certification in laboratory techniques |
| Work Environment | Research laboratories, biotech companies, academic institutions | Laboratories, research facilities, biotech companies |
| Job Focus | Providing core services for single cell analysis, data processing, and sample preparation | Performing technical procedures, sample handling, and data collection |
The Single Cell Core generally refers to a facility or service providing specialized single cell analysis support, while a Single Cell Technician is an individual performing technical tasks within that environment. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work in comparable settings, but the Core often oversees multiple technicians and manages core services.

In this role, you will apply applied mathematics, deep learning, inverse methods, and scientific computing techniques to tackle complex research challenges involving heterogeneous dynamical systems with biologically and medically relevant applications. You will have the opportunity to shape emerging research directions, contribute to high-impact publications and grant initiatives, and collaborate with experts across mathematics, data science, and experimental biology.
Research & Computational Model Development
- Develop and implement advanced mathematical, statistical, and machine learning models to analyze complex biological and scientific datasets.
- Design interpretable dynamical systems frameworks using biologically informed neural networks (BINNs), differential equations, inverse methods, and scientific machine learning approaches.
- Build scalable, reproducible computational workflows and optimize code for high-performance scientific computing applications.
- Apply multi-task learning and data-driven modeling techniques to heterogeneous single-cell and multivariate time series data.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Scientific Discovery
- Partner with interdisciplinary research teams and experimental collaborators to translate theoretical models into practical scientific applications.
- Contribute to the design and interpretation of perturbation experiments and high-dimensional biological data analyses.
- Support the identification of regulatory interactions, prediction of system-level responses, and generation of actionable scientific insights.
Scholarly Contribution & Research Leadership
- Contribute to peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and presentations for national and international research conferences.
- Participate in collaborative grant proposal development and broader research strategy initiatives focused on scientific machine learning and mathematical biology.
- Help foster a collaborative research culture through seminars, workshops, working groups, and cross-disciplinary training activities.
- Support graduate and undergraduate student engagement in computational and interdisciplinary research activities.
- Contribute to the dissemination of research methods through open-source software, reproducible workflows, and collaborative knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Stay current with emerging methodologies in applied mathematics, machine learning, and data science to continuously advance research capabilities.
- Ph.D. in applied mathematics, mathematical biology, computational biology, statistics, or a closely related quantitative field.
- Demonstrated expertise in mathematical modeling of biological systems, including differential equations, stochastic models, or agent-based models.
- Strong record of peer-reviewed publications in applied mathematics and/or mathematical biology journals, with a minimum publication record comparable to leading early-career researchers in the field (e.g., at least 6-8 peer-reviewed articles in reputable applied mathematics, biomathematics, or interdisciplinary journals).
- Experience with scientific machine learning, equation learning, or data-driven modeling of dynamical systems.
- Proficiency in Python (or similar scientific computing languages) and modern machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and contribute to externally funded research projects.
