Job description

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School, a college-preparatory, JK-12 Episcopal day school in Alexandria, Virginia, seeks a dynamic, innovative leader to assume the role of Lower School Director on July 1, 2017.

Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Lower School Director serves on the senior administrative team and shares the responsibility for setting the strategic vision for and overseeing the day-to-day operations of a 9-acre campus of 60 faculty members and 361 students in JK-5th Grade. The Lower School Director works in a highly collaborative environment, particularly with the Associate Lower School Director, Lower School Counselor, grade-level team leaders, Director of Multicultural Education, Diversity and Equity Initiatives, and the Director of Teaching and Learning, to support division-wide work on co-curricular and curricular programming, student wellness, faculty and staff hiring, and faculty growth and development.

The Lower School Director sets the tone for the division, reflecting high professional and academic standards, integrity, and a commitment to our mission to pursue goodness as well as knowledge and to honor the unique value of each of our members as a child of God in a caring community. The successful candidate will be a proven educator and leader who finds joy in working with young children and possesses the vision, creativity, and organizational skills to lead a highly-skilled faculty and staff. The candidate will be a master teacher with excellent written and oral communication skills. He or she will employ best practices and possess an excellent academic background, including an advanced degree.

The Lower School of St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes is a positive, vibrant community. There is great support of and energy around many different areas of school life inside and outside of the classroom. The Lower School community is a reflective and innovative one where teachers are encouraged and empowered to try new approaches and techniques. Recent areas of focus include design thinking (by students and faculty), technology integration (we are 1:1 in grades 2-5), enhancing mathematics instruction (through the adoption of Singapore Math- Math in Focus and other means), the introduction of a new phonics program, and integrating the teaching of non-cognitive skills (flexibility, empathy, optimism, perseverance) into the curriculum.  The incoming Lower School Director will play a pivotal role in not only implementing these initiatives, but also developing a vision that will move the division forward for years to come.
