What does a simulation software engineer intern do?

A Simulation Software Engineer Intern assists in developing and testing software models that simulate real-world processes or systems. They typically work with experienced engineers to write code, debug simulations, and analyze results to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Interns may use tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Python, and contribute to projects in fields like automotive, aerospace, or robotics. The role helps interns gain hands-on experience in software engineering and simulation technologies, preparing them for future careers in the industry.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a simulation software engineer internship?

As a Simulation Software Engineer Intern, you will typically contribute to developing, testing, and refining simulation models used for validating real-world systems or products. Your daily tasks may include coding simulation algorithms, analyzing performance data, debugging issues, and collaborating with engineers from other disciplines such as hardware, robotics, or product design. Interns often work closely with mentors, attend team meetings, and may have opportunities to present findings or improvements. This role provides hands-on experience with industry-standard simulation tools and fosters valuable teamwork and technical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a simulation software engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Simulation Software Engineer Intern, you need a strong foundation in programming languages (such as C++, Python, or MATLAB), mathematical modeling, and computer science principles, typically supported by ongoing or completed coursework in engineering or related fields. Familiarity with simulation tools (like Simulink or Modelica), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly exposure to CAD or physics engines is often required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for accurately developing, testing, and refining simulation models within collaborative engineering environments.

What is the difference between Simulation Software Engineer Internship vs Simulation Software Engineer?

AspectSimulation Software Engineer InternshipSimulation Software Engineer
Required CredentialsCurrently pursuing or recently completed a relevant degree (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering)Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field, with some roles preferring experience or certifications
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in corporate R&D or product teams, with mentorshipFull-time professional role in engineering teams, often in R&D or product development
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies, automotive, aerospace, and simulation firms for training and developmentEmployed in similar industries, focusing on developing and maintaining simulation software products

The main difference is that a Simulation Software Engineer Internship is a temporary, learning-focused position for students or recent graduates, while a Simulation Software Engineer is a full-time professional role requiring more experience and responsibility in developing simulation software.

Job description

We are Siemens

Siemens Digital Industries Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation, and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our software.

Our Shared Engineering Services team plays a critical role in validating and releasing products across the Simcenter portfolio, a comprehensive suite of simulation software and test solutions that enables customers to predict product performance across domains ranging from 3D CAE and system simulation to physical testing. We foster a collaborative engineering culture that encourages creative thinking, technical excellence, and innovative approaches to solving complex challenges.

We are seeking an experienced Software QA Engineer – CFD to join our Quality Center of Excellence and help ensure the quality, reliability, and performance of our engineering simulation products. In this role, you will focus on testing CFD and simulation workflows, with particular emphasis on HyperMesh CFD functionality, test automation, performance, and product robustness across multiple platforms. You will work closely with software development, product management, applications engineering, DevOps, and other cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑quality simulation solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drive end‑to‑end quality assurance activities across the software development lifecycle, independently planning and executing testing activities to ensure product quality, reliability, and release readiness.
  • Review user stories, product requirements, use cases, and design specifications to assess testability and develop comprehensive test strategies and scenarios for CFD and engineering simulation workflows.
  • Design and execute functional, regression, stress, performance, and cross‑platform tests, combining manual and automated testing to validate product functionality and robustness.
  • Develop and maintain automated test suites using scripting technologies, and port or optimize existing automated tests for high‑performance computing environments to improve test coverage and execution efficiency.
  • Investigate software defects beyond initial identification by providing clear reproduction steps, analyzing logs and diagnostic information, and collaborating with development teams to support root‑cause analysis and resolution.
  • Improve QA effectiveness through AI‑assisted testing, automation initiatives, and modern QA practices, while continuously evaluating opportunities to enhance test efficiency, coverage, and product quality.
  • Collaborate closely with Development, DevOps, Product Management, Applications Engineering, Documentation, and QA teams, championing software quality and promoting testing standards and best practices throughout the development lifecycle.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computational Fluid Dynamics, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 5–7 years of software QA/testing experience with CAE or CFD products, including hands‑on experience validating complex engineering simulation workflows.
  • Hands‑on experience with HyperMesh CFD or similar CFD pre‑processing tools, with a strong understanding of CFD fundamentals and simulation workflows.
  • Strong knowledge of mesh generation techniques, including surface and volume meshing, boundary‑condition definition, and solver setup workflows.
  • Practical experience with at least one major CFD solver or simulation environment, such as Simcenter STAR‑CCM+, ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, AcuSolve, or STAR‑CCM+.
  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, defect lifecycle management, test design, and test management tools such as Jira, Xray, Azure DevOps, or similar platforms.
  • Proficiency in scripting and test automation using Python, Tcl, Shell scripting, or similar technologies, along with strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
