How much do simulation consultant jobs pay per year?
What does a simulation consultant do?
A Simulation Consultant uses modeling and simulation techniques to analyze complex systems, optimize processes, and support decision-making. They work across various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and engineering, to create virtual models that test different scenarios without real-world risks. Their role involves data analysis, software expertise, and collaboration with stakeholders to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
What kinds of projects do simulation consultants typically work on, and how do they impact the client organization?
Simulation Consultants often work on diverse projects such as optimizing manufacturing processes, analyzing supply chain logistics, improving healthcare systems, or modeling complex engineering scenarios. Their work involves collaborating closely with clients to understand specific challenges, developing tailored simulation models, and interpreting data-driven insights to recommend actionable improvements. The impact of their work is significant, as it helps organizations test solutions in a risk-free environment and make evidence-based decisions. Simulation Consultants frequently present their findings to stakeholders and may also help train in-house staff to use or interpret simulation tools. This role offers variety and the opportunity to make a tangible difference across multiple industries.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the simulation consultant position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Simulation Consultant, you need a strong background in engineering, mathematics, or computer science, combined with expertise in modeling and simulation methodologies. Proficiency with simulation software (such as AnyLogic, Simul8, or Arena), computing languages (like Python or MATLAB), and relevant certifications (like Certified Modeling & Simulation Professional) is highly valuable. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you effectively translate client needs into simulation solutions and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. These skills are essential for delivering high-impact, accurate simulations that drive informed decision-making and client satisfaction.

Job description
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.
We are seeking a Simulation and Visualization Engineering Supervisor to lead a growing team within Strategic Analysis and Operations at GA-ASI in San Diego, CA. This position reports to Operations Analysis (OA) and is responsible for the planning, management, and technical performance of an engineering unit specializing in algorithm development and data science for high-end visualizations of large datasets generated from mission analysis tools such as AFSIM, Command Professional Edition (CPE), and STK. The supervisor will manage all phases of assigned engineering projects from inception through completion while leading a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and manage engineering teams in simulation-based algorithm development, data science, and visualization projects, ensuring technical, quality, business, and financial objectives are met.
- Oversee data science and visualization for advanced aircraft projects using data sets generated by STK, AFSIM, and Command Professional Edition to reveal mission effectiveness and system performance insights.
- Resolve complex engineering problems, act as a consulting technical resource, and apply advanced data visualization techniques.
- Develop novel data-driven methods to clearly convey advanced designs and CONOPS.
- Prepare and present technical reports and findings at engineering meetings, program reviews, and customer forums.
- Maintain frequent communication with internal stakeholders and external customers, documenting and presenting technical results.
- Implement data visualization strategies for the Strategic Development business unit and contribute to business development, capture, and proposal efforts.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and technical guidance to less experienced and early-career engineers, mentoring them for advancement into Operations Analysis and Simulation & Visualization roles.
- Support hiring, attraction, selection, retention, and development of professional and technical talent.
- Perform annual performance assessments.
We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Qualifications
- Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
- Extensive technical expertise in applying engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice to plan, execute, and coordinate work to meet established deadlines and resolve management and technical problems.
- Advanced programming and software development skills for algorithm development, data visualization, and analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++, JavaScript), including experience developing custom algorithms and extensions for simulation and visualization environments.
- Understanding of military CONOPS and multi-domain operations, with experience supporting mission-focused analysis and visualization.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop engineering staff, including junior and early-career engineers, and to build talent pipelines and career progression pathways for technical teams.
- Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD TS clearance (SCI eligibility preferred).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with AFSIM, Command Professional Edition, or comparable simulation environments.
- Knowledge of military aircraft operations and design.
- Experience modeling ISR, autonomy, electronic warfare, or contested operations.
- Background in software development best practices including version control (Git), Agile methodologies, testing, and documentation.
- Experience with campaign-level analysis or wargaming.
- Experience with advanced data science techniques and visualization frameworks.
- Previous experience developing and mentoring operations analysts or similar technical roles.
- Passionate about talent development and building high-performing teams.
