What is the difference between Signal Processing Engineer vs Communications Engineer?

AspectSignal Processing EngineerCommunications Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Signal Processing, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Communications, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, R&D departmentsTelecom companies, network providers, infrastructure firms
Industry UsageDesigning algorithms for audio, video, radar, and sensor dataDeveloping and maintaining communication systems and networks
Search & Comparison IntentFocuses on signal analysis, filtering, and data processingFocuses on network design, protocols, and transmission systems

While both roles involve electrical engineering principles, Signal Processing Engineers primarily develop algorithms for analyzing and filtering signals, whereas Communications Engineers focus on designing and maintaining communication systems and networks. The roles often overlap in telecommunications, but their core responsibilities differ based on the specific application and industry focus.

What does a signal processing engineer do?

A Signal Processing Engineer designs, develops, and implements algorithms and systems to analyze, modify, and interpret signals such as audio, video, radar, or sensor data. They work with both analog and digital signals to extract meaningful information, improve signal quality, and enable communication between devices. Their work is essential in industries like telecommunications, healthcare (medical imaging), audio engineering, and defense. Signal Processing Engineers often use programming languages like MATLAB or Python, and work closely with hardware and software teams to optimize system performance.

What does a signal processing engineer do?

A signal processing engineer is an information technologies expert that analyzes and alters digital signals to make them more accurate and reliable. As a signal processing engineer, your responsibilities are to develop, manage and update digital signals, creating algorithms to process them more efficiently. Qualifications for a signal processing engineer include a bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering, math, or physics, and skills in various programming languages, like C++. You can find signal processing engineer jobs in a wide variety of industries from security to logistics.

What are some typical challenges signal processing engineers face when working on real-time systems?

Signal Processing Engineers working on real-time systems often encounter challenges related to processing speed, latency, and resource constraints. They must design algorithms that efficiently handle large volumes of data without sacrificing accuracy, all while operating within the hardware's computational limits. Collaborating closely with hardware engineers and software developers is common to ensure seamless integration and optimal system performance. Staying updated with the latest advancements in digital signal processing (DSP) tools and techniques also helps address these challenges effectively.

Job description

About us

Signal 1 helps health systems accelerate AI adoption with a category defining technology platform. Signal 1's first product, the AI Management System (AIMS), gives health system leaders visibility and control across their growing AI portfolios. AIMS offers comprehensive oversight of predictive and generative AI applications and introduces guardrails to mitigate downside risks. It sets the standard for Responsible AI in healthcare. Purpose-built for healthcare and informed by years of experience managing AI at scale in other industries, Signal 1 empowers healthcare organizations to translate innovation into real clinical, operational, and financial outcomes. Looking ahead, Signal 1 is expanding into agent management to support and accelerate the adoption of agentic AI across healthcare systems, and to build bespoke agentic solutions alongside its partners. Signal 1 is a 30-person, well-funded and rapidly growing startup with strong product market fit and deployments at a growing number of top-20 US and Canadian health systems. We were founded by Tomi Poutanen (former Chief AI Officer at TD Bank, co-founder of the Vector Institute) and Mara Lederman, with early backing from Geoffrey Hinton.

We deploy by embedding with our partners directly. That's where you come in.

The role

As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you own the implementation of Signal 1's platform, AIMS, inside a partner health system end to end. You'll
embed with their teams, connect to their secure data systems, learn how their AI models and clinical workflows actually work, and build the monitoring and governance that fits them, including bespoke monitors when the standard ones don't. You'll also build bespoke AI solutions alongside our partners, including agentic systems that automate and improve real clinical and operational workflows and help orchestrate the growing portfolio of AI a health system runs.

You'll work closely with hospital stakeholders to earn their trust, understand their problems more deeply than they've articulated them, and spot the opportunities worth building for. What you learn in the field flows back to the platform: the patterns you surface and the tooling you build make our platform better for every partner. Reliability and correctness aren't
features here; they're the job. In healthcare the consequences of failure are categorically different - you'll work at the point where AI safety stops being theoretical and starts being a patient outcome.

Whatyou'll do

  • Lead the deployment of Signal 1's platform and solutions across multiple health systems
  • Understand the AI use cases deployed across a health system - predictive, generative, and agentic - recommend the key metrics to monitor for each, and onboard them to AIMS
  • Develop agentic solutions that improve healthcare workflows and solve real customer pain points, from first conversation through to production
  • Coordinate across multiple stakeholders and drive alignment to onboard applications end to end
  • Work both autonomously and collaboratively with Data, Governance, ML, and Engineering teams - across partner health systems and within Signal 1
  • Turn recurring patterns from the field into reusable building blocks, feeding what you learn back into the platform so each deployment makes the next one faster

Whatwe're looking for

  • Experience delivering complex AI systems in production or customer-facing settings
  • Strong grounding in AI/ML, with the ability to design and implement robust solutions and reason rigorously about model behavior and evaluation in production
  • Hands-on experience building LLM-based systems
  • Solid backend development skills, with strong programming experience in Python, Java, or similar
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and comfort working independently in fast-paced environments
  • Highly client-facing, with excellent communication skills and a proven ability to build and grow strong client relationships - including with non-technical stakeholders across business and hospital teams

Nice to have

  • Direct experience with healthcare data and regulated environments (HIPAA, PHI, on-prem or air-gapped deployments).
  • Background in clinical informatics or health-tech.
