Job description

Title: Sign Shop Production Manager
Classification: Exempt

Position Summary
The Sign Shop Production Manager is responsible for leading the daily operations of the sign production facility, ensuring high-quality products are delivered safely, efficiently, and on schedule. This position oversees production workflow, supervises sign shop personnel, manages inventory, coordinates customer orders and installation schedules, and provides exceptional customer service while supporting inside sales activities. The Production Manager serves as the operational leader of the sign shop, driving productivity, maintaining quality standards, promoting a culture of safety, and ensuring customer expectations are consistently exceeded.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Production & Operations Management
  • Plan, prioritize, and oversee daily production schedules to ensure timely completion of customer orders.
  • Assign work to production staff and monitor workflow to maximize efficiency and productivity.
  • Supervise and mentor sign production employees, providing training, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Ensure all signs and graphics meet company quality standards and customer specifications.
  • Troubleshoot production challenges and implement solutions to minimize downtime.
  • Monitor workloads and adjust staffing priorities to meet production deadlines.

Customer Service & Sales Support
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for inside sales, customer inquiries, and order processing.
  • Read and interpret customer specifications, drawings, and work orders.
  • Prepare and enter customer orders accurately using Vista by Viewpoint or other company software.
  • Communicate order status and production timelines with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Coordinate production priorities with Project Managers and field operations to ensure successful installations.

Sign Production
  • Operate sign-making software and equipment to produce custom traffic control, regulatory, construction, and commercial signage.
  • Set up layouts and produce graphics using plotters, printers, laminators, and related production equipment.
  • Apply lettering, graphics, reflective sheeting, and overlays to sign substrates.
  • Assist with fabrication, assembly, finishing, and packaging of completed signs as needed.

Inventory & Materials Management
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of aluminum blanks, reflective sheeting, plywood, hardware, vinyl, inks, and production supplies.
  • Order shop materials and equipment, as necessary.
  • Conduct routine inventory counts and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of materials.

Safety & Quality
  • Lead daily safety meetings with production staff.
  • Promote and enforce all company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained and operational.
  • Monitor quality control processes to reduce waste and rework.

Leadership
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, and employee development.
  • Evaluate employee performance and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Support company initiatives and process improvements.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Coordinate installation schedules with Project Managers and Operations.
  • Assist with shop budgeting and cost control initiatives.
  • Monitor production metrics and identify opportunities for operational improvements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects to enhance efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to operate production machinery, computers, and hand tools.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to production equipment, machinery, adhesives, paints, reflective materials, and shop tools.

Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate Degree in Business, Manufacturing, Graphic Design, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of sign production experience required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or production management experience preferred.
  • Experience in traffic control, highway signage, or commercial sign manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience with production scheduling and workflow management.
  • Experience using Vista by Viewpoint or similar ERP software is preferred.
